Canada has issued travel advisories for 9 vacation destinations that Canadians love

10 September 202510 Mins Read

Planning a fall getaway or winter escape? Before you book that flight or start dreaming about warmer temperatures and sunny beach days, it’s worth checking Canada’s latest travel advisories.

The federal government has recently updated its travel warnings for several top destinations — including fan-favourite hotspots across Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean. While most advisories are cautionary, they point to issues like regional crime, terrorism threats, or ongoing political instability that could impact your trip.

Advisories are classified according to four risk levels, from “Take normal security precautions” and “Exercise a high degree of caution” through to “Avoid non-essential travel” and “Avoid all travel.”

These recent travel advisories don’t mean you need to cancel your plans, but they do highlight potential risks that could impact your safety or disrupt your trip.

With that in mind, here’s what Canadians need to know about the latest government travel advice for nine popular destinations, including vacation hotspots like Costa Rica, Cuba and Mexico.

Italy

Last Updated: September 9, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in Italy due to the threat of terrorism.

Details: From Rome’s ancient wonders to Venice’s romantic canals, Italy is a dream destination for so many Canadians — but staying aware of your surroundings is key to a safe trip.

Italy faces an elevated terrorism threat, with authorities warning that attacks could occur at any time. Popular sites like train stations, airports, major monuments, and crowded piazzas are considered higher-risk areas where extra vigilance is needed.

With the Jubilee 2025 set to take place from December 24, 2024, to January 6, 2026, expect an even bigger influx of tourists and pilgrims. This Holy Year will bring large-scale religious events, processions, and massive gatherings across the city, making planning ahead essential.

If you’re heading to Rome during this time, be prepared for crowds, traffic disruptions, and heightened security measures. Police and military presence will be increased at major landmarks, transit hubs, and public spaces.

Petty crime is also common, especially in tourist hotspots. Pickpocketing and bag-snatching are frequent on public transport, near major attractions like the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain, and in busy markets. Thieves often work in groups and target distracted tourists. Be cautious of anyone trying to distract you or offering unsolicited help, and keep your valuables secure.

Thailand

Last Updated: September 3, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in Thailand due to ongoing political tensions and sporadic demonstrations in Bangkok and elsewhere in the country.

Details: Thailand’s stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and delicious cuisine make it a bucket list destination for so many Canadian travellers — but recent security concerns mean you’ll want to stay informed about local conditions.

The security situation can change rapidly, particularly around the Thailand-Cambodia border since an exchange of fire in May. While most tourist areas are safe, incidents involving explosives and violence have happened in the past, including in popular destinations and public areas.

Political instability is another concern in Thailand, particularly in Bangkok. Canadian travellers are warned that the military can exercise sweeping powers that could include the right to censor media, impose curfews, search for weapons or restrict movement.

Petty crime is also common in tourist zones, with pickpocketing, bag-snatching, and scams targeting visitors. Be especially cautious on public transport, in crowded markets, and around major attractions. Jet ski and tuk-tuk scams are notorious, with operators sometimes demanding inflated payments for alleged damages.

Visitors are also warned to be careful at night in entertainment areas throughout the country, including in Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao, particularly during full moon parties,

United Kingdom

Last Updated: September 3, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in the United Kingdom due to the threat of terrorism.

Details: The U.K. offers incredible experiences from London’s landmarks to Scotland’s highlands — but travellers should stay alert, especially in major cities and during large events.

The U.K. maintains a “substantial” terrorism threat level, meaning attacks are likely. Past incidents have involved knife attacks, vehicle rammings, and explosions, particularly in London but also in other cities like Manchester and Edinburgh. Transport hubs, tourist attractions, and large gatherings are considered higher-risk.

Petty crime is also a concern, especially in tourist hotspots. Phone snatching has become increasingly common in London, with thieves on motorcycles or bicycles grabbing devices from pedestrians. Pickpocketing occurs frequently on the London Underground, around major attractions, and in busy shopping areas.

Violent crime, while less common for tourists, does occur. Knife crime has increased in some urban areas, and unlicensed taxis have been linked to robberies and sexual assaults. Always use licensed black cabs or trusted ride-sharing apps.

United Kingdom Travel Advisory

Mexico

Last Updated: September 10, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in Mexico due to high levels of criminal activity and kidnapping.

Details: With stunning beaches, buzzing cities, and rich cultural experiences, Mexico remains a favourite getaway for Canadians. That said, staying safe means keeping your guard up, especially outside of resort areas.

Criminal activity, including organized crime, is widespread throughout Mexico. Even popular tourist destinations like Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Vallarta have experienced incidents of violence, including shootings at restaurants, hotels, and nightclubs. Border areas and certain states like Guerrero, Michoacán, and Sinaloa face particularly high risks.

Kidnapping, including express kidnapping where victims are forced to withdraw money from ATMs, has been reported. Petty crimes like pickpocketing and bag-snatching are common in crowded areas, on public transport, and near popular attractions.

If you’re staying at a resort, try to remain within the property or use resort-approved excursions. When venturing out independently, stick to well-known tourist areas during daylight hours, avoid displaying valuables, and use only reputable transportation services.

Car rentals should avoid obvious rental company branding, and driving after dark is strongly discouraged due to increased crime risks and poor road conditions in some areas.

Mexico Travel Advisory

Cuba

Last Updated: September 3, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in Cuba due to shortages of basic necessities including food, medicine and fuel.

Details: Cuba’s classic cars, stunning beaches, and vibrant culture continue to attract Canadians, but ongoing shortages and infrastructure challenges require extra preparation.

According to the Government of Canada, widespread shortages of food, medicine, bottled water, and fuel continue to affect daily life across the island. Power outages lasting several hours are common, especially outside Havana. Transportation services, including taxis and car rentals, can be unreliable due to fuel shortages.

It’s essential to pack any necessary medications and consider bringing extra supplies.

Petty crime remains a concern in tourist areas, with theft from hotel rooms and rental cars occurring frequently. Overcharging of tourists is common, and some locals may approach visitors aggressively offering services or goods.

While violent crime against tourists is rare, incidents of harassment and scams have been reported. Stay in groups when possible, avoid displaying valuables, and be cautious when approached by strangers offering help or services.

Cuba Travel Advisory

Jamaica

Last Updated: September 3, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in Jamaica due to the high level of violent crime.

Details: Jamaica might be brimming with stunning coastlines, rum cocktails, and world-class cuisine, but safety isn’t something to take lightly — including in parts of Kingston and Montego Bay.

Violent crime, including armed robberies and gang-related shootings, remains a serious issue in some areas, even near resorts. While incidents often occur in known high-risk zones, crime can happen anywhere, at any time.

Officials suggest avoiding walking alone, especially after dark, and always sticking with trusted people. Tourists have been targeted in hotel rooms, on the street, and even by people posing as friendly strangers.

Sexual assault and harassment have been reported, including incidents involving resort staff or people met through dating apps. Women and 2SLGBTQI+ travellers should be particularly cautious. Drink spiking and “romance scams” are also common tactics used to target tourists.

Jamaica Travel Advisory

Dominican Republic

Last Updated: September 3, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in the Dominican Republic due to crime.

Details: The DR’s pristine beaches and all-inclusive resorts attract thousands of Canadians yearly, but crime affects both tourist areas and local communities.

Petty theft is common throughout the country, including at major resorts, airports, and tourist attractions. Motorcycle theft is particularly prevalent, with thieves snatching bags from pedestrians or reaching into vehicles at traffic lights. Hotel room theft and taxi-related crimes have also been reported.

Violent crime, including armed robbery and assault, occurs in urban areas, especially after dark. Sexual assault has been reported involving both strangers and resort staff. Solo travellers should avoid isolated areas, including secluded parts of hotel grounds, particularly after sunset.

The situation near the Haitian border remains volatile due to ongoing instability in Haiti. Areas like Dajabón have experienced violence and unrest. If travelling near the border, do so only during daylight hours, keep identification documents accessible, and follow all instructions from authorities.

Dominican Republic Travel Advisory

Costa Rica

Last Updated: September 3, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in Costa Rica due to crime.

Details: Costa Rica’s eco-tourism appeal and “Pura Vida” lifestyle attract many Canadians, but crime rates have increased in recent years, affecting both tourists and locals.

Petty theft is a major issue, particularly around bus terminals, beaches, restaurants and viewpoints. Thieves often work in teams, using distraction tactics to snatch phones, purses and passports — the latter particularly being targeted during high season. The risk increases in popular areas like Jacó, Puerto Viejo, Manuel Antonio, and even parts of downtown San José.

Rental cars are prime targets for thieves who may use electronic devices to prevent doors from locking properly. Never leave anything in your vehicle, and always double-check that it’s locked before walking away.

While violent crime is less common, assaults and robberies have occurred, including in Caribbean coastal towns. There have also been reports of drink spiking and sexual assault, particularly at beach resorts and in taxis. Stick with trusted transportation, keep drinks in sight, and avoid isolated areas.

Costa Rica Travel Advisory

France

Last Updated: September 9, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in France due to the elevated threat of terrorism.

Details: France is a bucket-list destination, whether you’re sipping wine in a Parisian cafe, strolling through the lavender fields of Provence, or hitting the slopes in the Alps. But while the country offers beautiful architecture, culture, and food, officials warn that terrorism remains a concern.

France is currently at its highest terrorism alert level under the Vigipirate plan. The country has seen multiple attacks in recent years, and the government maintains a visible security presence, especially in places like airports, museums and tourist sites. Expect bag checks, military patrols and occasional security delays.

Petty crime is also a concern in places like the Paris Metro, RER trains, and crowded tourist spots. Skilled pickpockets — often working in groups — target distracted travellers for phones, wallets and passports.

More serious incidents, including group assaults and late-night muggings, have also been reported near train stations and outside nightlife venues. Residential break-ins happen too, especially in large cities and vacation rentals along the coast. Lock up your valuables, avoid flashing cash or jewellery, and stay aware in transit zones.
