Canada has issued travel warnings for 9 popular summer vacation destinations

11 July 20259 Mins Read

If you’re gearing up for a summer escape, it’s worth taking a closer look at Canada’s latest travel advisories before you set off.

The Government of Canada has issued travel warnings for a number of popular vacation spots. While this doesn’t mean you need to panic or cancel your plans, it’s a good idea to stay informed and travel with caution.

Whether you’re headed to idyllic Caribbean beaches or lively European capitals, the advisories span concerns like petty crime, gang activity, terrorism threats and shortages of essential supplies.

Some regions face unique risks, while others simply call for extra awareness and common sense on the ground.

These alerts are classified according to four risk levels, ranging from “Take normal security precautions” and “Exercise a high degree of caution” to “Avoid non-essential travel” and “Avoid all travel.”

Here’s a closer look at some of Canada’s current advisories for vacation hotspots across Europe and the Caribbean.

Jamaica

Last Updated: June 30, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in Jamaica due to the high level of violent crime.

Details: Jamaica is a go-to destination for Canadians in search of white-sand beaches, vibrant culture, and that laid-back island atmosphere.

But beneath the tropical charm, safety remains a concern. Violent crimes, including armed robbery and homicide, continue to occur, even in well-known vacation areas like Montego Bay and Kingston.

Guns are widely available, and much of the violence is tied to gangs and drugs. Some particular areas have been flagged by police as high-risk due to gang activity, but crime can happen anywhere and at any time.

Tourists have been targeted in robberies and thefts, especially in crowded areas or when walking alone. States of emergency are sometimes declared in high-crime zones, giving police expanded search and detention powers. If you’re travelling during a state of emergency, expect checkpoints and increased police presence.

Bahamas

Last Updated: June 26, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in The Bahamas due to high rates of crime, especially in Nassau and Freeport.

Details: Known for its crystal-clear waters, endless sunshine and postcard-worthy beaches, The Bahamas is a top pick for Canadians looking to unwind in the tropics. But amid the paradise, Canadian travellers should remain cautious.

Petty crimes like pickpocketing and bag snatching are common, especially in busy tourist zones, cruise terminals, and resort areas. Even daylight hours don’t guarantee safety, particularly around holidays, festivals, and regattas when theft tends to spike.

More serious crimes, including armed robbery, sexual assault, and fraud, have been reported in Nassau and Freeport — mainly outside of tourist zones, but not exclusively. Gang-related violence contributes to a high murder rate, and break-ins and carjackings do sometimes occur. Tourists have even been targeted while removing roadblocks from their path.

Italy

Last Updated: June 26, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in Italy due to the threat of terrorism.

Details: With its timeless architecture, incredible cuisine, and legendary landmarks, Italy continues to be a dream destination for many. But even in a land of gelato and grand piazzas, staying alert is smart.

Italy, like the rest of Europe, faces an ongoing risk of terrorism. While there haven’t been any major recent incidents, large public gatherings — such as the 2025 Jubilee events in Rome and the Vatican — could be targeted. Visitors should expect enhanced security, heavy crowds, and possible disruptions during these times.

Authorities maintain a public alert system and have visibly increased police and military presence in tourist-heavy areas.

Petty crime is another common issue. Pickpockets and bag snatchers are especially active in tourist hotspots, train stations, and busy public places. Criminals often use distraction tactics to steal valuables.

Vehicle break-ins and thefts from rental cars are frequent. Criminals on scooters may grab bags through open windows, even while you’re stopped in traffic.

Italy Travel Advisory

France

Last Updated: June 26, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in France due to the elevated threat of terrorism.

Details: France is a dream destination with postcard-perfect cities and mouthwatering food, but safety should still be top of mind.

The country is on its highest terror alert level, and security is tight. Canadian travellers should expect to see military patrols at airports, train stations, and tourist hotspots. This is part of Operation Sentinelle, France’s response to ongoing threats.

There have been terror attacks in recent years, and authorities warn more could happen. Targets have included schools, cultural venues, restaurants, and major events. Bomb threats — some real, some hoaxes — have also caused evacuations in public places like malls and transportation hubs.

On top of that, petty crime is common, especially in Paris. Pickpockets often work in groups on the metro, RER trains, and around popular attractions.

To stay safe, avoid isolated spots after dark, keep valuables hidden, and be alert in crowded places. If you’re driving, don’t stop for roadside distractions.

France Travel Advisory

United Kingdom

Last Updated: July 2, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in the United Kingdom due to the threat of terrorism

Details: From its historic castles and lush countryside to lively pubs and world-famous attractions, the U.K. remains a bucket-list destination for many Canadians.

Still, travellers should be mindful of the ongoing threat of terrorism. Authorities warn that more terror attacks are likely, and past incidents, ranging from stabbings and vehicle rammings to explosions, have led to casualties. Most have occurred in London, but future attacks could happen anywhere.

Public spaces like transport hubs, markets, bars, schools, and places of worship are potential targets. High-alert days include religious holidays, sporting events, and major political occasions.

Petty crime is another issue, especially in London’s tourist hotspots like Leicester Square and on the Tube. Pickpocketing, phone snatching, and theft from parked cars are common. Restaurants, bars, and cafes are also prime spots for distraction thefts, so don’t leave your bag slung over a chair or your phone on the table.

United Kingdom Travel Advisory

Mexico

Last Updated: June 26, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in Mexico due to high levels of criminal activity and kidnapping.

Details: Mexico is a sun-soaked favourite for Canadians, known for its vibrant culture, stunning beaches, and delicious cuisine. But while the resort life is all about relaxation, travellers need to stay vigilant beyond the poolside.

Violent crime and gang-related activity are widespread, with organized criminal groups operating in many parts of the country. Armed confrontations between cartels — or with police and military — can erupt unexpectedly, including in cities like Culiacán and Mazatlán.

In fact, several areas are now under a “Avoid non-essential travel” warning due to elevated risks of violence and organized crime.

Regions currently affected include large portions of Chiapas, Chihuahua, Colima, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas — with limited exceptions such as select major cities and tourist areas that are accessible by air. For instance, places like Palenque, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo, Morelia, and Monterrey are not included in the advisory when accessed under specific conditions.

Petty crimes like pickpocketing and purse snatching are common in airports, bus stations, and the Mexico City metro. Criminals sometimes pose as police or create distractions to steal valuables.

Border areas are especially risky, with frequent reports of shootouts and roadblocks. It’s safest to travel by air and avoid land crossings altogether.

Mexico Travel Advisory

Spain

Last Updated: July 7, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in Spain due to the threat of terrorism.

Details: With its endless sunshine, mouthwatering tapas, and buzzing cities like Madrid and Barcelona, Spain is a top destination for Canadians chasing culture and coastlines. But as dreamy as the sangria and seaside views are, it’s smart to stay alert while exploring.

Spain continues to face a general risk of terrorism. While attacks are infrequent, authorities remain vigilant, particularly in busy public areas like restaurants, markets and major landmarks, where the risk is considered higher.

Petty theft is a more common issue and tends to spike in tourist-heavy spots. Pickpocketing is widespread in crowded places such as subways, airports, beaches and outdoor dining areas.

Barcelona in particular has become a hotspot for stolen passports. Notorious areas include Las Ramblas, the Sagrada Família and the metro system. In Madrid, places like Gran Vía, Puerta del Sol and Retiro Park see the most theft complaints.

Spain Travel Advisory

Cuba

Last Updated: July 2, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in Cuba due to shortages of basic necessities including food, medicine and fuel.

Details: Cuba is a vibrant destination with colourful streets, classic cars, and dreamy beach resorts that draw in Canadians year after year. But while the country promises endless charm and natural beauty, recent complications mean travellers should go prepared.

Since October 2024, Cuba has been hit with nationwide power outages that can happen without warning. While most holiday resorts have generators, longer blackouts can still interrupt basic services like air conditioning and hot water.

On top of that, there are critical shortages of food, bottled water, medicine, and especially fuel. Getting around is tough, with public transportation limited and some tourists stranded due to empty gas stations.

Scams targeting tourists are also widespread, from overpriced services to fake tour guides and taxi drivers. Use only registered providers, and be cautious of overly friendly strangers.

If you are heading to Cuba this summer, make sure you’re clued up on the country’s latest entry requirements — which changed on July 1, 2025.

Cuba Travel Advisory

Dominican Republic

Last Updated: June 26, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in the Dominican Republic due to crime.

Details: With its palm-lined shores, turquoise waters, and sprawling all-inclusive resorts, the Dominican Republic is a tropical favourite among Canadian vacationers.

However, travellers should be mindful of safety concerns, particularly in urban centres and areas beyond resort zones, where law enforcement may be slow to respond. Petty crimes like pickpocketing and purse snatching are regularly reported at airports, beaches, transit terminals, and even hotel rooms.

Tourists are often targeted, and there have been incidents of drive-by thefts involving motorcycles — sometimes while vehicles are in motion or stuck in traffic.

Violent incidents, such as armed robberies and assaults, have occurred, especially after sunset. Rental cars and taxis have also been targeted, making it safer to avoid driving at night and to keep vehicle doors locked at all times.

The border with Haiti remains shut, and the surrounding regions are considered unstable. If you’re travelling near the border area, it’s crucial to stay informed and comply with any local authority instructions.
