Canada just issued travel advisories for 9 vacation destinations, including Cuba and Mexico

26 August 202510 Mins Read

Planning a trip abroad before the summer ends? Before you board your flight or start dreaming about beach cocktails and city strolls, it’s worth checking Canada’s latest travel advisories.

The federal government has recently updated its warnings for several top travel destinations — including hotspots in the Caribbean and across Europe. While most advisories are cautionary, some point to more serious issues like regional violence, high crime rates, or ongoing shortages of essentials like food and medicine.

Advisories are classified according to four risk levels, from “Take normal security precautions” and “Exercise a high degree of caution” through to “Avoid non-essential travel” and “Avoid all travel.”

These travel warnings don’t mean you need to cancel your plans, but they do highlight potential risks that could impact your safety or disrupt your trip. Whether it’s organized crime in Mexico, shortages of essentials in Cuba, or terrorism threats in France and the U.K., a little preparation goes a long way.

Here’s what Canadians need to know about the latest government travel advice for nine popular destinations, including vacation hotspots like Cuba and Mexico.

Mexico

Last Updated: August 25, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in Mexico due to high levels of criminal activity and kidnapping.

Details: With stunning beaches, buzzing cities, and rich cultural experiences, Mexico is a favourite getaway for Canadians — but staying safe means keeping your guard up.

The Government of Canada warns travellers to exercise a high degree of caution throughout Mexico due to high levels of crime and kidnapping. Organized crime is widespread, and even popular tourist hubs have seen incidents of violence, including in restaurants, hotels, and nightclubs.

Border zones and certain states like Guerrero, Michoacán, and Sinaloa are particularly high-risk and should be avoided unless absolutely necessary.

Petty crimes like pickpocketing and bag-snatching are common in crowded areas and on public transit. More serious threats — including armed robbery, carjackings, assaults, and express kidnappings — have also been reported.

Canadians are advised to stick to well-known tourist zones, avoid walking at night, refrain from displaying valuables, and use only reputable transportation services. If you’re renting a car, steer clear of anything with visible rental branding and avoid driving after dark.

Mexico Travel Advisory

Jamaica

Last Updated: August 25, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in Jamaica due to the high level of violent crime.

Details: Jamaica might be brimming with stunning coastlines, rum cocktails, and world-class cuisine, but safety isn’t something to take lightly — including in parts of Kingston and Montego Bay.

Violent crime, including armed robberies and gang-related shootings, remains a serious issue in some areas, even near resorts. While incidents often occur in known high-risk zones, crime can happen anywhere, at any time.

Officials suggest avoiding walking alone, especially after dark, and always sticking with trusted people. Tourists have been targeted in hotel rooms, on the street, and even by people posing as friendly strangers.

Women and 2SLGBTQI+ travellers should be particularly cautious, with reports of harassment, assault and romance scams, including incidents involving resort staff or people met online. Drink-spiking, credit card fraud, and lottery scams are also common — so trust your instincts, keep your drinks in sight, and protect your personal info.

Jamaica Travel Advisory

Dominican Republic

Last Updated: August 25, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in the Dominican Republic due to crime.

Details: White-sand beaches and all-inclusive perks make the Dominican Republic a top pick for a tropical escape — but that doesn’t mean it’s risk-free.

The Government of Canada advises a high degree of caution across the country due to crime, including incidents at major resorts. Petty theft is common in crowded places like beaches, buses, and airports, and thieves on motorcycles are known to snatch bags from pedestrians or even reach into cars at red lights. Tourists have also been targeted in hotel rooms and from inside taxis.

Violent crime, including armed robbery and assault, has occurred in big cities after dark, so it’s best to limit nighttime travel and stay in secure, reputable accommodations. Reports of sexual assault have also surfaced, even involving resort staff. Solo travellers should avoid secluded spots, including hotel grounds, after sunset.

The situation near the Haitian border is especially volatile. Dajabón and the surrounding areas have seen unrest and occasional violence. If you’re heading anywhere near the border, travel only during daylight, keep your passport accessible, and follow all instructions from authorities.

Dominican Republic Travel Advisory

Germany

Last Updated: August 25, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in Germany due to the threat of terrorism.

Details: Germany might seem like one of Europe’s safest destinations — and for the most part, it is — but travellers still need to keep their guard up, especially in crowded tourist zones and on public transport.

Though violent crime is rare, incidents do happen, including extremist-motivated attacks in public spaces. Germany remains under a general terrorism threat, with past attacks taking place in tourist areas, restaurants, and markets.

“Terrorist attacks could occur at any time,” Canada’s advisory warns. “Over the past few years, several attacks have occurred in Germany. These have resulted in many injuries and deaths. Further attacks are likely.”

Demonstrations and transit strikes are also relatively common and can disrupt travel, so keep an eye on local news and adjust plans accordingly.

Petty theft is another common threat for visitors. Organized pickpocket groups operate in busy areas like train stations, holiday markets, and transit hubs. Stolen passports are a growing issue, particularly on trains during peak travel seasons. Always keep your documents and valuables secure, and be cautious of distractions.

Planning to ski or hike in the Alps? Go with a guide, get proper insurance, and never head out alone.

Germany Travel Advisory

Cuba

Last Updated: August 25, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in Cuba due to shortages of basic necessities including food, medicine and fuel.

Details: Cuba remains a dreamy destination for Canadians, with its iconic classic cars, white-sand beaches and colourful cities — but it’s not without complications right now.

Travellers are being urged to exercise a high degree of caution due to widespread shortages of food, medicine, bottled water and fuel. Getting around the island can be tricky, with taxi and car rental services often affected. Power outages, sometimes lasting hours, are common — especially outside of Havana. If you’re heading to Cuba, pack essential supplies and don’t count on everything being available on arrival.

Petty crime is also a concern, especially in busy tourist zones, on public transit, and at nightclubs and beaches. Theft from hotel rooms and cars happens frequently, and visitors have reported overcharging, scams and even harassment by hustlers posing as helpful locals.

While violent crime is rare, assaults — including sexual assaults at resorts — have been reported. Stick to busy areas, lock up your valuables, and avoid walking alone at night or accepting unsolicited help.

Cuba Travel Advisory

United Kingdom

Last Updated: August 25, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in the United Kingdom due to the threat of terrorism.

Details: The U.K. offers world-class sights and experiences — from pub-hopping in London to hiking the Highlands — but travellers should stay alert, especially in major cities.

The U.K. faces a risk of terrorism, with a history of incidents involving knife attacks, vehicle rammings, and explosions. These incidents have occurred mainly in London, but have also happened elsewhere.

With the national threat level currently marked as “substantial,” travellers are advised to stay aware, especially around busy public spaces, transport hubs, and during large events or holidays.

Petty crime is also common, particularly in crowded areas and tourist hotspots like Trafalgar Square and the London Underground. Cellphone snatching, bag theft and pickpocketing often happen in restaurants, bars, and even hotel lobbies.

Violent crimes, including mugging and knife attacks, do occur, though they rarely involve tourists. Unlicensed taxis have been linked to robbery and sexual assault — so always stick to licensed services or trusted ride apps.

United Kingdom Travel Advisory

Costa Rica

Last Updated: August 25, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in Costa Rica due to crime.

Details: Costa Rica is considered a slice of paradise, but even in this tropical hotspot, it pays to stay cautious — especially in touristy zones and while on the move.

Petty theft is a major issue, particularly around bus terminals, beaches, restaurants and viewpoints. Thieves often work in teams, using distraction tactics to snatch phones, purses and passports — the latter particularly being targeted during high season. The risk increases in popular areas like Jacó, Puerto Viejo, Manuel Antonio, and even parts of downtown San José.

Rental cars are also a prime target. Break-ins happen frequently — even at national parks and hotel parking lots — and some criminals use electronic jammers to stop doors from locking. Never leave anything in your vehicle, and always double-check that it’s locked before walking away.

While violent crime is less common, assaults and robberies have occurred, including in Caribbean coastal towns. There have also been reports of drink spiking and sexual assault, particularly at beach resorts and in taxis. Stick with trusted transportation, keep drinks in sight, and avoid isolated areas.

Costa Rica Travel Advisory

France

Last Updated: August 22, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in France due to the elevated threat of terrorism.

Details: France is one of the most visited countries in the world, but even in Parisian bliss, you’ll want to keep your guard up.

France is currently at its highest terrorism alert level under the Vigipirate plan. The country has seen multiple attacks in recent years, and the government maintains a visible security presence, especially in places like airports, museums and tourist sites. Expect bag checks, military patrols and occasional security delays.

Petty crime is also a concern in places like the Paris Metro, RER trains, and crowded tourist spots. Skilled pickpockets — often working in groups — target distracted travellers for phones, wallets and passports. They’re particularly active near landmarks, in hotel lobbies, and on international train routes like Paris–Brussels and Paris–London.

More serious incidents, including group assaults and late-night muggings, have also been reported near train stations and outside nightlife venues. Residential break-ins happen too, especially in large cities and vacation rentals along the coast. Lock up your valuables, avoid flashing cash or jewellery, and stay aware in transit zones.

France Travel Advisory

Spain

Last Updated: August 25, 2025

Risk Level: Exercise a high degree of caution in Spain due to the threat of terrorism.

Details: Tapas, beaches, and stunning architecture make Spain a dream destination for many Canadians — but don’t let your guard down, especially in busy hotspots.

Spain’s current terrorism threat level is 4 out of 5 (“high”), and authorities warn that further attacks are possible. Past incidents have involved vehicle rammings and other violence in public areas, and potential targets include transportation hubs, tourist attractions, markets, and places of worship.

Extra caution is advised during major events, holidays, and large gatherings, when risk levels can spike. Police and security forces maintain a strong presence, particularly in busy urban areas.

Pickpocketing and bag snatching are also typical, particularly around tourist areas like Las Ramblas, Barceloneta Beach, and Madrid’s Puerta del Sol. Thieves often use distractions like asking for directions or pretending to be plainclothes police. Passport thefts are especially rampant, so consider carrying a copy and keep the original locked away.

Rental cars and parked vehicles are frequently targeted, and fake roadside emergencies have been used as set-ups for theft. Stick to secure parking lots, and be cautious if someone offers roadside help — unless they’re in uniform with a valid ID.
