Canada’s capital will host winter’s most epic free festival

We’re making the most of winter this year, Ontario. The days of staying inside and hiding from the season are over, and I know the perfect place to embrace the cold while still having a blast. Winterlude, happening from Jan. 30 to Feb. 16, promises “the best the Canadian winter has to offer,” and is free to attend. Does it get any better than that?

The festivities are spread out across Ottawa and Gatineau over the three weekends, and there’s no shortage of things to do.

Guests can check out the display of ice sculptures, zip down the snow slides, ride the Ferris wheel, or enjoy some live music (just to name a few things). The snow activities will be held in Jacques-Cartier Park, while the ice sculptures, live shows, and immersive light experiences await at Confederation Park, right next to the Rideau Canal.

Winterlude highlights a few events, if you’re having a tough time narrowing them down:

• Afterslide: An “after hours” bash on Feb. 6 and 7 with DJ performances, an illuminated Ferris wheel, tube sliding, and a 360° camera
• Mini Pow Wow and Indigenous Artisans Market: A free mini pow wow at the Canadian Museum of History, along with its Indigenous Artisans Market
• The Nordic Race: Gatineau’s only timed winter race will take place on Feb. 8. “Choose between the 1 km, 5 km, or 12 km distances and discover magical courses that run along the Gatineau River and Leamy Lake,” the event details.
• Capital City Bites: 40+ restaurants will showcase prix fixe menus, exclusive offers, and limited-time items
• Igloofest: Another festival happening within Winerlude. This music fest is “back by popular demand” with this year’s headliner, Steve Aoki. The festival is happening from Feb. 12 to 14.
•  Barbegazi: Happening at Byward Market, watch athletes launch up to 40 feet in the air during epic snowmobile performances

It’s going to be the winter event of the year (according to me, anyway), so start planning your visit to Ottawa.
