Canada’s largest Japanese Canadian summer festival is coming to this historic Vancouver neighbourhood

2 July 20252 Mins Read

One of Canada’s largest community arts festivals celebrates Japanese Canadian heritage in Vancouver, and this summer’s festival is completely free to attend. Taking place in the city’s historic Paueru Gai neighbourhood (now known as the Downtown Eastside), the Powell Street Festival is a beloved tradition that’s celebrating 49 years in 2025, making it one of the longest-running events of its kind in the country.

Every year, the festival brings together a range of live cultural performers, artisans, exhibitions, and food booths for a day of community fun and learning, attracting over 23,000 local and international attendees.

This includes live martial arts, music, and dance, as well as a marketplace to peruse, walking tours of the neighbourhood, and an amateur sumo tournament. All take place in both outdoor and indoor venues around the Powell Street area.

The first festival happened in 1977, and the official Powell Street Festival Society is now a registered non-profit organization representing the entire Paueru Gai Area.

“In addition to its signature event, the Society offers year-round programs and collaborates with local, national, and international organizations, artists, and communities to advance equity and well-being for all,” shares festival organizers.

This year’s Powell Street Festival will take place on Saturday, Aug. 2 and Sunday, Aug. 3, 2025, from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Stay tuned for more info on the festival’s 2025 programming to come!

When: Saturday, Aug. 2 and Sunday, Aug. 3, 2025
Time: 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
