New York’s Central Park may be one of the world’s most famous green spaces, but did you know Canada has an urban parkland that’s 22 times its size?

According to the City of Edmonton, the River Valley is the largest urban parkland in North America and is 22 times the size of Central Park. Edmonton’s River Valley offers natural beauty, fascinating wildlife, and a dynamic network of natural paths and trails, providing the city with a great outdoor escape year-round.

Along the North Saskatchewan River, the River Valley consistently provides Edmonton with diverse recreational experiences year-round, from leisurely strolls and picnics to exhilarating bike rides and paddles. According to the City of Edmonton, it also just happens to be the largest urban parkland in Canada, with more than 160 kilometres of maintained pathways and over 20 major parks scattered throughout.

What to do in the North Saskatchewan River Valley

This valley is an absolute dream for hikers and walkers, with over 160 kilometres to uncover. Edmonton actually has a great map of all the trails, as well as a distance guide between parks for those curious.

Before you head out, we’d suggest checking out the trail cautions and closures online map provided by the City of Edmonton. Here, you’ll be able to find all the information you’ll need before heading out on your journey.

The City also offers Outdoor Adventure Programs for kids, adults, and families as a whole. There are free drop-in, group and registered classes available, all with a variety of activities like fishing, biking, cross-country skiing (in the winter), archery, and so much more.

You’ll also be able to find 20 parks within the river valley itself, all of which have a great abundance of things to do.

There are currently 20 parks within the valley, with all of them offering their own unique advantages. The City of Edmonton actually made a list of their own popular recommendations for which park to go to for what activity you’re planning.

Park visitors can enjoy hiking and biking trails, picnic spots, as well as river access for canoeing and kayaking. Each park has its own hours, amenities, and rules, so we’d suggest checking out the park’s webpage on the City of Edmonton website for more information if needed.
