Need help filing your taxes? According to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), some Canadians may be eligible for free tax assistance.
It’s that time of year again as everyone gets ready to file their taxes in Canada before the April 30 deadline. However, filing taxes can be a pretty daunting task for some, which is why the CRA offers a free service for Canadians who qualify.
“Doing your taxes each year can feel like a big job, but you don’t have to do it alone!” reads a statement from the CRA.
How can you file your taxes for free in Canada?
Non-profits and organizations organize free tax clinics through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.
In 2024, volunteers submitted 980,000 tax returns and helped over 857,000 people. Combined, their efforts resulted in Canadians receiving $2.3 billion in benefits and credit payments.
And it’s not just for filing taxes this year — volunteers can even help people with their taxes going back 10 years.
Are you eligible?
To get free tax help, you’ll need to meet specific eligibility requirements.
“If you have a modest income and a simple tax situation, you might be able to get help from a volunteer at a free tax clinic,” states the CRA.
Those who qualify include single Canadians with an income of less than $35,000 and couples with less than $45,000.
To be able to get free assistance, your tax situation should be simple. This means you’re not a small business owner or don’t earn income from a rental property.
What should you do next?
If you meet the requirements, there are several ways you can get free assistance.
Most free tax clinics are open in March and April; however, some are open throughout the year.
You can find a tax clinic in an online directory that’s regularly updated.
You can visit in person, set up a phone call or video chat, or drop off your documents. Don’t forget to bring your tax slips, receipts, and a valid photo ID.
In addition to free tax clinic services, the CRA is sending out two million letters inviting eligible individuals to use SimpleFile. This online pilot program offers a “free, secure, and simplified method to do your taxes.”
Didn’t get an invite? You can use SimpleFile to file your income tax and benefit return either by phone or by paper.
