Cancelled God of War game would’ve returned to Ancient Greece

28 October 20252 Mins Read

Earlier this year, PlayStation canceled two first-party titles, one of which was a multiplayer God of War game that was in development at Bluepoint Games. Now, we know what that game would have looked like.

Development screenshots obtained by MP1st reveal that the game would have returned the series to its original setting: Ancient Greece. The now-canceled game’s maps featured Greek temples, classical statues, Greek-style pottery, and an armory stocked with shields, swords, and spears.

The armory is especially interesting as, according to the anonymous source who shared the images, Hades — the Greek god of death and the underworld — would have played a major role in the game, serving as the owner of the armory and the various sulfur pools within the game’s cave system. It’s unclear how the game was meant to fit into God of War canon, but the inclusion of a (presumably alive) Hades seems to suggest it may have been set prior to the events of God of War III, given the character’s fate in that game.

Also notable is that it seems two versions of the armory were tested. The first version looks about like you’d expect, but the second features a corrupted, Silent Hill-esque aesthetic. The walls have corroded, and strange red tendrils are poking up out of the marble floor, suggesting that, at some point in the game, the armory would potentially undergo a cosmetic change likely tied to the game’s narrative.

Based on a recent job listing by Bluepoint Games for a senior combat designer, some are wondering if the studio is instead focusing on a remake of the original God of War. Based on the screenshots, the team certainly built a number of assets that could be used in an updated version of the game, given both were set in Ancient Greece. Already, the studio is known for high-quality remakes of Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls. With that and previous God of War franchise experience, perhaps a remake of the first game from Bluepoint will happen in due time.
