Cardiff Hotels See Rate Surge Amid Oasis Reunion Tour, Occupancy Growth Lags

The Oasis reunion tour in Cardiff significantly boosted hotel room rates, though occupancy growth remained modest due to the market’s small size.

On July 4, 2023, Cardiff welcomed the return of the iconic band Oasis as they launched their highly anticipated reunion tour. The event drew over 70,000 fans, marking one of the summer’s most significant musical gatherings. This influx of visitors had a notable impact on the local hospitality industry, particularly in terms of hotel performance.

Impact on Cardiff’s Hotel Market

Cardiff’s hotel market is relatively small, comprising just over 6,000 rooms. This limited supply often leads to significant volatility in average daily rate (ADR) growth, especially during major events. The Oasis reunion tour was no exception. While the event spurred impressive rate growth, occupancy growth did not see the same level of increase.

Room Rates Surge Amid Modest Occupancy Growth

Despite the high demand generated by the concert, occupancy growth in Cardiff’s hotels was described as lackluster. This was not attributed to the event itself but rather to the limited size of the market. Upper Upscale hotels, which represent about 17% of the total rooms available, experienced the most significant rate growth. These high-end establishments also reported the highest occupancy rates, although they remain the smallest class by room share.

In contrast, Midscale and Economy hotels reported the lowest actualized occupancy and even saw declines over the concert weekend. This disparity highlights the varying impacts of major events on different segments of the hotel market.

Comparison with Other Major Events

In June 2024, Taylor Swift’s single show in Cardiff achieved better occupancy levels than the Oasis tour. However, the room rates during the Oasis concert were GBP62.00 higher than those during Swift’s Eras Tour, resulting in a higher revenue per available room (RevPAR) for the Oasis event. This comparison underscores the unique dynamics of hotel performance during different high-profile events.

Oasis Tour Continues to Draw Crowds

Following their successful Cardiff performance, Oasis has a series of sold-out shows lined up across the U.K., U.S., Mexico, and Australia, extending through November 2025. The band’s next stop is Manchester, where forward bookings indicate strong occupancy rates. As of July 7, occupancy on the books for the Manchester shows stands at 73.3% for July 16, with subsequent dates on July 19 and 20 showing 78.2% and 69.1%, respectively.
