Where once there were 64 Christian movie hopefuls at the beginning of our bracket, now only two movies are left standing: The Passion of the Christand The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

The Passion of the Christ – Stirring and Reverent
Despite Facing the Giants taking an early lead in their Famous Four matchup, it couldn’t hold off The Passion of the Christ, which proved to be one giant the beloved football flick couldn’t overcome. Still, kudos to the Kendrick Brothers for their film’s remarkable Cinderella run in our tournament.
On its face, you might be surprised that an R-rated movie would be in contention for the Greatest Christian Movie of All Time. But it’s no accident that The Passion of the Christ has made it to the championship round. If I had to sum up Mel Gibson’s movie in one word, it would be impactful. The film certainly left its mark on me and, as the voting for our bracket suggests, I’m not the only one. The Passion of the Christ is stirring, reverent and (let’s be honest) unflinching in its portrayal of Jesus Christ’s suffering and sacrifice.
As Plugged In said at the time: “Christians with a sanitized view of biblical history—or complacent believers who’ve come to take Christ’s suffering for granted as they’ve matured in the Lord—will be shocked into a new appreciation of His divine sacrifice. … Families should never undertake its viewing lightly or without spiritual and emotional preparation. However, unlike films with lesser ratings that exploit brutality, it doesn’t at all glamorize maliciousness and murder. Indeed, it is disturbing for all the right reasons.”
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – Thrilling and Splendorous
If its Famous Four matchup against Ben-Hur had been a chariot race, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe would have crossed the finish line with a comfy lead over its opponent. Ben-Hur put up the best fight yet against the C.S. Lewis adaptation, but it still wasn’t particularly close. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe garnered more than 70% of the vote against Ben-Hur.
It’s been that kind of tournament for the classic Christian allegory, dominating every opponent that has come its way. And with good reason—The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a cherished literary work, and it receives a quality adaptation here. It’s a fantasy tale that ranks right up there with the best of them, but it possesses a truer ring than many of its peers because, well, it’s an allegory for the Truth.
As Plugged In said in its review of the film: “… this is not a tame movie. But in the words of Lucy, it is ‘good.’ Shrek director Andrew Adamson has deftly captured the thrill and splendor of Lewis’ stories and preserved the essential allegory at the heart of Narnia. Lewis once referred to his Chronicles as a ‘trifle.’ I wonder, though, if he would still be saying that after seeing it brought to life like this and after pondering how much spiritual good his words (and now pictures) have the potential of doing in the hearts of generations he never knew.”
So Different, Yet Very Much the Same
One of the joys of Christian Movie Madness has been the opportunity to appreciate the vast range of Christian cinema. The 64 Christian movies chosen for this bracket emphasize the broad scope and scale of stories portrayed in films of faith. And yet, despite their differences, I think it would be fair to say that most of the films in our bracket had the same goal in mind: to glorify Jesus Christ.
Our finalists embody this dichotomy perfectly. The Passion of the Christ is a biographical film based on the Gospel accounts. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is an allegorical fantasy story that serves as the on-ramp to a larger series (of movies and books). The former takes place in ancient Judea. The latter takes place in Narnia, a land filled with magic and talking animals.
But for all their differences, they too share many similarities. Judea is under the heel of the Roman Empire, while Narnia suffers under the curse of the White Witch. Both feature heartrending depictions of a willingly sacrificial death (Jesus on the cross, Aslan on the Stone Table). And both are miraculously and triumphantly resurrected.
The Passion of the Christ and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe are both classic films and adaptations. But only one will walk away with the title of Greatest Christian Movie of All Time as determined by you, the voter.
