Christie Brinkley may be the eponymous California girl, but the legendary supermodel is sharing how she was discovered in another country.
On a recent episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, Brinkley, 71, shared that her modeling career kicked off when she was approached by a man during her days as a struggling artist living in Paris.
“My Paris apartment didn’t have a telephone. It didn’t have a bathtub or a shower,” Brinkley explained to Clarkson. “I would go to the public baths a couple of blocks away. If I needed to make a phone call, I would go to the telephoning office and I would use the phone there.”

A trip to that telephoning artist turned out to be just the thing that started Brinkley’s modeling career. A photographer in the neighborhood had seen Brinkley at the telephoning office before, and when he got a job that needed a fresh-faced California girl like Brinkley, he knew she’d be perfect for the gig.
“He thought, ‘that girl from the telephoning office!'” Brinkley recalled.

One day, Brinkley was carrying her puppy around and wasn’t paying attention to where she was going. It was then that she ran right into the photographer.
“I smacked right into him in the phone office,” Brinkley shared, explaining that moment was the catalyst for her legendary career.
While it may seem like a stroke of luck, Brinkley went on to say that the run-in with the photographer is just another example of how fate has played a role in her life. She chronicles her extraordinary life, which has been filled with these occurrences, in her new book, appropriately titled “Uptown Girl.”
“Whether it was something really bad, really heartbreaking, or really devastating, it can still propel you places that you never suspected, you know?” Brinkley shared.
