Frontmezzjunkies reports: CSC’s Casting of The Baker’s Wife

Hold onto your seats, fellow theatre lovers—Ariana DeBose, the phenomenal Oscar-winning star of West Side Story, is set to take on the iconic role of Geneviève in The Baker’s Wife at Classic Stage Company. Honestly, this is the news that’s making my theatre-junkie heart race—DeBose in a rare NYC revival of this hidden gem? It’s a dream that I didn’t realize I had come true. I’ve always been a fan of CSC’s reputation for reimagining the classics with daring, freshness, and fierce passion, but this casting just elevates everything to another level.

On top of it all, The Baker’s Wife has never received a full-scale production in New York City, which is a hard truth to imagine. Featuring a book by Joseph Stein (Fiddler on the Roof) and music and lyrics by the legendary Stephen Schwartz (Wicked), this show is a hidden treasure, bursting with emotion, humor, and the kind of storytelling that makes you sit up and pay attention. Thanks to Gordon Greenberg (Broadway’s The Heart of Rock and Roll) directing, I’ve no doubt this production will be something special—a gorgeous, powerful revival just waiting for CSC to work its magic on it for the modern audience that lovingly attends.

But the biggest highlight for me is Ariana DeBose. Her talent, charisma, and sheer presence have already made her one of the most thrilling, versatile stars on stage and screen today, and seeing her take on The Baker’s Wife is going to be an absolute must-see and a hard ticket to find. I can already picture her bringing that fierce, layered energy to Geneviève, making this a run to remember.

With Golden Globe-winning actor Scott Bakula being added to the mix as Aimable Castagnet, the production keeps getting more interesting with every passing day. Now we just have to wait for the remaining cast and creative team to be announced. I’m counting down the days—because this is the kind of revival CSC does so uniquely well, and with DeBose front and center, this revival promises to be nothing short of electrifying.
