Wayne Gretzky is once again back in the news for a not-so-glamourous reason.
‘The Great One’ has come under fire over the past few months due to his close relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump amid tensions between the United States and Canada.
Gretzky is now in the news for one of his old business ventures.
According to TMZ, Gretzky is suing former business partner Veera Mahajan for filing a lawsuit in 2022 against him that he alleges to be “meritless.”
In the initial lawsuit, Mahajan alleged that she invested in a weight-loss gum under the name “OMG.” She did this after allegedly hearing Gretzky claim to lose 35 pounds over just a few weeks with help from the gum.
Mahajan then went on to say that Gretzky admitted to lying about those claims, which damaged the company. This resulted in Mahajan suing the NHL legend for fraud and seeking unspecified damages.
Both Gretzky and his wife, Janet, were spokespeople for the gum. Janet made multiple Instagram posts promoting the product’s effectiveness with captions like “If you count calories and aren’t happy with the results try OMG” and “CHEW GUM…LOSE WEIGHT!”
Wayne denied the accusations, and after fighting the lawsuit, Mahajan filed to dismiss the lawsuit last year.
He is now firing back at Mahajan with a lawsuit that accuses her of malicious prosecution. In it, Gretzky says that her initial lawsuit was only made because she assumed he would settle “for millions in order to avoid potential negative publicity.” He is seeking unspecified damages in this suit.
While Mahajan’s initial lawsuit was dismissed, that is not the only legal headache for Gretzky stemming from the weight-loss gum. According to Yahoo, Steven Sparks, the founder of “OMG,” also has an ongoing lawsuit against Gretzky with similar accusations and is asking for $10 million in damages along with $500,000 in attorney fees.
