Create your own magical paper lantern at this workshop in Edmonton

24 April 20263 Mins Read

This paper lantern workshop will have you playing with lights and bending wire all afternoon.

Local artist GABS will be holding a workshop where you’ll be creating your own Jack Rabbit lantern. Throughout this process, you’ll learn more about the lantern-making process, get a crash course in electronics, and end the class with your very own illuminated lantern.

If you aren’t familiar, GABS is known around the city for her impressive lantern-making skills. She draws inspiration from the Giant Lanterns of Japan’s Nebuta Matsuri and, on her own, has developed the necessary skills to create unique lanterns and creatures for local festivals and parades. This includes festivals like the Deep Freeze Festival, the Kaleido Family Arts Festival, and more.

If you’re ready to dive into the creation of these beautiful lanterns, let’s get right into it.

What to expect

This workshop is with the Sculptors’ Association of Alberta, with GABS being your guide for the afternoon. It’ll be taking place on May 9, and you can find yourself in the Harcourt House Annex Building at 1 p.m. to start your creation.

Throughout the course, you’ll learn the basics of creating a lantern, including wire bending, papering methods, and how to play with electronic lights in your piece. By the end of the class, you will have your own illuminated lantern to take home— not to mention the skills and knowledge to create more charming lanterns yourself.

As for the price, this workshop costs $95 for members of the Sculptors’ Association of Alberta and $120 for non-members. This includes all the materials and tools you’ll need to participate.

For more information or to confirm a spot, the association asks you to contact its email address: [email protected]. Payment is via e-transfer or text, but it asks you to confirm a spot is available first.

If this weekend of lantern making is calling your name, don’t hesitate to reach out. It’s coming up fast, and you won’t want to miss your chance!

When: Saturday, May 9, 2026
Time: 1 to 5 p.m.
Where: 10211 112th St. NW, Edmonton, Alta.
Cost: $95 for SAA members, $120 for non-members
