Critical Role’s next series uses Daggerheart, its own D&D competitor

13 May 20252 Mins Read

Critical Role has announced a new miniseries, Age of Umbra, which will build a story using the group’s own game Daggerheart. Matthew Mercer will lead the play, with fellow Critical Role co-founders Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Taliesin Jaffe, and Travis Willingham all at the table.

Daggerheart is a tabletop RPG system developed by Darrington Press LLC, a subsidiary of Critical Role Productions. The new system is already known for its flexibility, which has been showcased in previous Critical Role one-shots.

Session 0 will air on May 22 at 7 p.m. PDT. Viewers can watch the original cast create their characters, lay down their foundations, and plant their characters’ roots in Age of Umbra’s world. The Series premieres on Thursday, May 29 at 7 p.m. PDT and will air weekly on Thursdays in that hour, airing on Beacon, Twitch, and Youtube.

YouTube VODs will be available the following Monday after each episode, and each session will be split into two parts for a podcast format. Part 1 will post on Thursday after the premiere, and Part 2 on Tuesday. Beacon subscribers will receive podcasts instantly and without ads.

Critical Role has taken the world by storm in the past decade. Initially starting as a group of friends playing Dungeons and Dragons, Critical Role has become one of the fastest-growing independent media companies in the world. There is no better time to get in on the hype right now, considering how hyped fans will be over the original cast reuniting for the mini.
