The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) reported that global cruise passenger volume reached 37.2 million in 2025, the highest level on record. The 2026 State of the Cruise Industry report indicates that nearly 90% of cruisers intend to sail again, reflecting high satisfaction and growing interest among both experienced and new travelers.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
According to CLIA’s 2024 Global Economic Impact study, cruise tourism generated $198 billion in global economic impact in 2024. The industry supported 1.8 million jobs worldwide and contributed $60 billion in wages. In the United States, the cruise sector contributed $75 billion in economic impact, supported 333,000 jobs and over $25 billion in wages, and generated $41.4 billion in gross domestic product (GDP). Most of this economic impact is attributed to shoreside spending, including investments in ports, destinations, and local communities. The cruise industry supports a wide range of businesses, including transportation providers, hotels, restaurants, and suppliers.
Demographic Trends Among Cruise Travelers
The report notes that the cruise industry continues to attract a younger and more diverse audience. Approximately one-third of cruise passengers are under the age of 40. Additionally, about one-third of cruise trips are multigenerational, indicating the appeal of cruise vacations for families and groups.
Fleet Composition and Growth in Experience Segments
The global cruise fleet is balanced across vessel sizes, with roughly equal shares of small, medium, and large ships. Trends indicate growth in luxury cruising, expedition travel, and exploration-focused itineraries. There is also increased demand for immersive experiences, such as curated shore excursions, cultural engagement, and extended time in destinations. Private island destinations offered by cruise lines continue to be a significant driver of demand.
Investments in Efficiency and Sustainability
Cruise lines are investing in new ships and technologies to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions. Nearly all new ships are being built with fuel-flexible engines, and the industry is increasing the use of lower-emissions fuels, onshore power connectivity, and other environmental technologies. The cruise sector remains committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, a goal that will require collaboration across industries, infrastructure development, and access to alternative fuels at scale.
Partnerships and Destination Management
The industry is working with governments and local stakeholders to plan itineraries and manage tourism volumes. These partnerships aim to create opportunities for structured tourism management and support local economies.
Outlook for the Industry
The 2026 State of the Cruise Industry report projects continued growth, an expanding traveler profile, and ongoing investment in ships, technology, and sustainability initiatives. The report emphasizes the importance of collaboration, infrastructure investment, and regulatory progress to maintain the industry’s economic and environmental goals.
