DC’s Supergirl art uses a Star Wars character in weird mix-up

4 June 20264 Mins Read

In one of the most bizarre mix-ups by a major studio in recent memory, DC has mistakenly included an obscure Star Wars character in a piece of official art promoting DC Studios’ Supergirl movie hitting theaters later this month. While the error is puzzling, the explanation for how a deep-cut alien from the Star Wars sequels wound up in Supergirl promotional artwork might be simple.

On Tuesday, DC announced a new collection for its official online shop that featured a “curated selection of limited-edition art, apparel, and collectibles featuring Bilquis Evely’s artwork from Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and designs inspired by the upcoming film.” One of those pieces is a print called “Across the Galaxy” that features new Evely artwork of Kara Zor-El (aka Supergirl), Ruthye Marye Knoll, and a collection of alien passengers they encounter on their adventures.

Strangely, one of those aliens appears to be Lexo Sooger from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Who is it supposed to be? Apparently Screecher, an alien who will appear in Supergirl who looks vaguely like Lexo Sooger.

At this point, one might be asking, “What in the Glup Shitto is a Lexo Sooger? Screecher who?!” This is Lexo Sooger.

According to Wookieepedia, “Lexo Sooger was a Dor Namethian male who was the star masseur at Zord’s Spa and Bathhouse in Canto Bight. Sooger used to be an Assassin.” That probably doesn’t clear anything up for anyone unfamiliar with the deepest recesses of the Lucasfilm archives, because Lexo Sooger appeared only briefly onscreen in Star Wars: The Last Jedi… in a deleted scene. In an early cut of Rian Johnson’s Star Wars film, Rose and Finn escape from Canto Bight on a horse-like Fathier, and they briefly pass through Zord’s Spa and Bathhouse, where Lexo Sooger is giving another alien one of his famous rubdowns.

(If Star Wars massage lore gets your hyperdrive fired up, you can learn more about Lexo Sooger’s body-oiling prowess in the anthology book, Canto Bight.)

As for Screecher, we don’t know much about them, other than that they’re in Supergirl and that Lobo actor Jason Momoa was spotted hanging out with them earlier this week. You can watch Momoa and Screecher hawk Supergirl tickets in the Instagram reel below.

So how did this seemingly unofficial DC Comics x Star Wars crossover happen? One believable explanation attributes the mix-up to Hanlon’s razor: Someone at DC may have simply sent artist Bilquis Evely the wrong reference material. Lexo Sooger and Screecher share similar body types, skin tones, and styles of dress. Heck, Screecher’s design may have even been inspired by Star Wars aliens.

Polygon has contacted DC for comment on how this mix-up of alien background characters happened, and will update this story when the company responds. As of the time of publishing, DC is still selling the $119.95 Supergirl “Across the Galaxy” metal print on its store and Evely hasn’t commented on the situation.

This sort of error certainly isn’t the first time something like this has happened. A few years ago, Marvel Comics almost published a variant cover of its comic book series Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man that featured a non-Marvel character. The artist Bengal drew a variant comic cover of Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1 that included multiple Spider-people, including what the artist thought was Marvel’s Spinneret. However, Bengal mistakenly drew the character Spinnerette from artist Krazy Krow’s satirical webcomic series. Bengal ultimately removed that character from his cover art.

Supergirl hits movie theaters on June 26. Don’t expect an appearance from Lexo Sooger, though.
