Detroit Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell Reveals What He’ll Never Forget About 9/11

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell was in New York City 25 years ago when the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks forever changed the city he called home while playing for the Giants.

On Friday, the anniversary of the attacks, Campbell was asked about his memories of that time and reflected on the tragedy, the devastation, and the remarkable sense of unity that followed.

“It’s something you never forget,” Campbell, who donned a Detroit Fire Department hat for his media availability ahead of Sunday’s season opener, said.

For Campbell, one of the most striking parts of the experience was seeing the extremes of human behavior emerge in the aftermath of an unimaginable tragedy.

“You get the worst of humanity, and you get the best all in a matter of minutes, really,” he said.

Campbell said the response from New Yorkers was particularly inspiring. In a city known for its fast pace, he recalled watching people put everything aside to help those around them.

“One of the most inspiring things that you could ever witness be around is in the middle of a tragedy, especially in New York, where people, man, they’re in a hurry, right?” Campbell said. “And it’s about getting to one spot to another, and you got places to go, things to do, and that happens. And man, everybody just pitches in to help.”

That spirit extended well beyond New York, Campbell said, as people from across the country sacrificed time with their families to travel to the city and help with the recovery efforts.

He also acknowledged the courage it took for people to even make their way into New York in the aftermath of the attacks.

Campbell said the tragedy ultimately brought Americans together in a way that is difficult to replicate.

“It definitely pulled our country together,” he said.

Twenty-five years later, Campbell still carries the memories of those who were lost and the people who stepped forward in the aftermath.

“There was a lot of loss, and those are those things you don’t forget,” Campbell said. “And I can’t believe it’s been 25 years.”
