Dexter Is Leaving Netflix US After Just One Year — But It’s Safe Elsewhere For A While

No licensed show seems to stay on Netflix in the US for very long. That applies to Dexter: the award-winning Michael C. Hall Showtime series that will depart the United States in June 2025 after only being available for a year. However, it’ll continue streaming on Netflix in international territories for a while longer.

As we first reported last May, Netflix was set to re-add Dexter to its library unexpectedly in June 2024 in the United States. That came months after the series began being re-added to the streamer in international territories in March of that year.  Netflix in the US hadn’t seen the show since 2020, when the show expired, having been added to the streamer under an old deal with Showtime throughout the 2010s. It was an unexpected license given that most distributors had held back from licensing their biggest shows to Netflix, although that practice has changed in recent years due to multiple factors that we won’t get into here.

Following the re-addition of Dexter to Netflix throughout 2024, the series pulled in a staggering 1.01 billion viewing hours on the streamer, equating to 94.80 million views.

In the case of Dexter, we suspect Paramount licensed the show, in the same way it did for the likes of Yellowjackets, to help juice interest in their shows in the hopes people will move over to Paramount+. As you may know, Paramount+ is home to a few shows that continue beyond the initial eight seasons, including Dexter: New Blood and Dexter: Original Sin, and coming up: Dexter: Resurrection. Thankfully, in the case of Yellowjackets, the license currently runs through late 2027.

While a removal notice has yet to be displayed on the show’s page, and barring any last-minute renewal of the license between Netflix and Paramount, the show will be departing Netflix in the United States in full on June 19th, 2025, with your last day to watch being June 18th.

When will Dexter be leaving Netflix internationally?

While international territories aren’t losing the show quite as quickly as the United States, our intel suggests that the license will be expiring shortly. Our understanding is that all international territories like the United Kingdom and Canada could see the show depart Netflix as early as March 31st, 2026 which aligns exactly two years after it was added.

Dexter Already Leaving NetflixDexter Already Leaving Netflix

It’s going to be a pretty busy month for removals on Netflix US. We’ve just got word that all the classic 1980s Mobile Suit Gundam anime titles are set to leave, in addition to series like The Equalizer seasons 1-3 leaving, Ordinary People on June 26th, and the usual movie turnover.

Are you disappointed that Dexter might be leaving Netflix so soon? Let us know in the comments down below.
