DJ Kid Koala’s space-themed animated film is coming to CIFF

2 September 20252 Mins Read

Canadian scratch DJ Kid Koala’s debut animated film will premiere at this year’s Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF).

The film is called Space Cadet and is based on the graphic novel of the same name, written and illustrated by Kid Koala in 2011.

Kid Koala is well-known in the music scene as one of Canada’s last surviving scratch DJs, using turntable techniques and physical vinyl records to produce high-energy sounds at his live show. He has collaborated with artists Gorillaz and Deltron 3030 and has contributed to scores for films including Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Baby Driver.

The Alberta premiere of the film at this year’s CIFF marks Koala’s debut into the world of animation. You definitely won’t want to miss this!

What to expect

The animated feature film will screen on Sept. 19 at Contemporary Calgary, and again at Chinook 15 on Sept. 28.

Space Cadet follows a guardian robot who searches for new life after his ward, Celeste, a bright young astronaut, leaves for a solo mission in outer space.

The film is described as a “futuristic lullaby” full of music that explores themes of memory and the bonds that connect us, which director Eric San (Kid Koala) claims is a real tearjerker.

With a score also crafted by San, it’s bound to be a colourful and magical mix of sound and animated visuals.

Director in attendance

Kid Koala will be in attendance at the Sept. 19 screening of the film at this year’s CIFF. He is also available to meet and answer questions at CIFF’s usual director Q&A format.

It’ll be a great way for fans of Koala’s music, graphic novels and the film to come together and find community.

The film is one of 34 total animated films at this year’s Calgary International Film Festival, which includes both features and shorts.

If you’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to meet the legendary Kid Koala, now’s your chance! We’ll see you there.

When: Friday, Sept. 19, 2025
Time: 8:30 p.m.
Location: Contemporary Calgary Dome — 701 11th St. SW
Cost: $19+
