Dropout CEO and frequent show host Sam Reich announced on Friday that the company is releasing the first two seasons of its comedy game show Game Changer on Blu-ray, which is available to order now.
Game Changer is one of the earliest shows produced for Dropout, back when that was just the name of CollegeHumor’s streaming service: The show’s first season premiered in 2019, a year before the company dropped the CollegeHumor name and fully rebranded as Dropout. As the title “Game Changer” implies, the game its contestants play changes each episode, and the players have no idea what the rules are before the episode begins. The first season includes the episode “Make Some Noise,” which was spun off into its own show a few years later. Season 2 includes “Do I Hear $1?”, in which Ally Beardsley, Grant O’Brien, and Raph Chestang debase themselves for cash, as well as the classic “Yes or No,” an episode specifically designed to infuriate American Girl doll shoemaker Brennan Lee Mulligan.
“Listen, digital media is great. Without it, toilet time would be boring,” Reich says in the announcement video. He acknowledges that the only-online nature of so many streaming shows leaves the door open for them to disappear into the abyss. (Looking at you, Netflix.) The way around that? Physical media, baby, which is why Dropout is experimenting by releasing physical media, something Netflix and other streamers have stopped doing in recent years, no matter how much money I would give them to purchase Glass Onion and now Wake Up Dead Man on disc.
Reich states that this release is an experiment for the company, so it’s admittedly bare-bones, with no special features or commentaries included. If the Blu-ray sells well, don’t be surprised if more Game Changer or other Dropout shows get released on disc as well. Later seasons of Game Changer and other shows like Very Important People have released behind-the-scenes looks between new episodes, and extended versions of those featurettes would fit in perfectly on a special features bonus disc. Just saying.
The Game Changer Blu-ray collection retails for $28 at the Dropout store. New merch also includes a Game Changer Loop-De-Loop blanket, Game Changer slippers, and a pin honoring Jacob Wysocki’s viral “You are a regular guy” rant from a recent episode of Make Some Noise.
