The first project to arrive from the Duffer Brothers’ Upside Down Pictures following the conclusion of Stranger Things is officially just around the corner. Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen, an atmospheric wedding horror series, has been confirmed for a March 2026 premiere on Netflix.
First announced in 2023, the series comes from creator and showrunner Haley Z. Boston. While fans await the final season of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer have taken on executive producer roles for this project, with the series produced under their Upside Down Pictures production company banner
Additional executive producers include Hilary Leavitt, Andrea Sperling, and Weronika Tofilska, who also serves as a director. The series was shot in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, between January and May 2025.
Thanks to a new exclusive first look from Entertainment Weekly, which also spoke with Boston, here is what you need to know about the show so far.
When will Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen be on Netflix?
According to an exclusive reveal from Entertainment Weekly, the limited series is set to premiere on March 26th, 2026. It’s part of a packed March schedule, which includes Vladimir (March 5th), One Piece season 2 (March 10th), and Virgin River season 7 (March 12th).
The series was previously slated for a 2025 release before being shifted to the 2026 window. Filming took place in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, running from January 20, 2025, to May 1, 2025.
What is the plot?
The series is an atmospheric horror set at a wedding, following a bride and groom in the week leading up to their “ill-fated nuptials,” which is inspired by the likes of Rosemary’s Baby and Carrie.
The story centers on Rachel Harkin (Camila Morrone) and Nicky Cunningham (Adam DiMarco). According to Entertainment Weekly, the couple travels to his wealthy family’s secluded vacation home midwinter, where they are set to be married in five days. Rachel’s paranoia grows as strange events begin to occur.
Creator Haley Z. Boston describes the show as exploring “the fear of marrying the wrong person through a horror lens,” drawing inspiration from classics like Carrie and Rosemary’s Baby.
Discussing the show’s oppressive mood, creator Boston explains that the goal was for the audience to “feel the paranoia and the fear that Rachel is feeling,” deliberately “constructing the show in terms of her discomfort” even when the character isn’t present. She connects this dread to the universal anxiety of entering a partner’s childhood home and meeting the in-laws, noting that “it really represents how it feels to walk into a house for the first time… There’s all this lore that you are not aware of and you’re suddenly stepping into it”.
Regarding the Duffer’s involvement in the project, Matt Duffer clarified that while the show falls under their Upside Down Pictures banner, they are stepping back to let new voices lead. He explained their approach as “finding talent and creatives that we deeply respect and helping them get the show off the ground,” rather than running the day-to-day production. “We were knocked flat when we first read Haley’s script,” the Duffer Brothers previously said about the series in a statement. “She is a major new talent with a singular voice — her writing is twisted, terrifying, funny, and just … very Haley. We feel so lucky to be producing her first show, and we can’t wait to share her vision with the rest of the world.”
The series features a strong ensemble cast, including an Emmy nominee and a Stranger Things alumnus:
- Camila Morrone as Rachel Harkin (The Bride)
- Adam DiMarco as Nicky Cunningham (The Groom)
- Jennifer Jason Leigh as Victoria Cunningham
- Ted Levine as Dr. Cunningham
- Jeff Wilbusch as Jules
- Karla Crome as Nell
- Gus Birney as Portia
- Zlatko Burić
