Easy summer day trips from Toronto to charming small towns

26 June 20253 Mins Read

Craving a change of scenery but don’t want to spend hours on the road? Some of the most charming small towns are just a short drive from Toronto, offering the perfect escape for a summer day trip.

Whether you’re in the mood for waterfront views, boutique shopping, local eats, or scenic nature walks, these nearby destinations have something for every kind of explorer.

Small towns in Ontario

Here are some of the best small-town getaways you can visit from Toronto in a day, and trust us, they’re worth the drive.

Belfountain

This charming little hamlet is actually located in Caledon right here in the GTA. Drive along the scenic Forks of the Credit Road, visit the local shops. Plus, be sure to walk along the stunning suspension bridge at the Belfountain Conservation Area.

Creemore

Just about an hour and a half north of Toronto, this town is known for its hidden gems, local shops, small-town vibe, and weekly farmers markets.

Oh, and of course, it is home to the smallest jail in North America.

It’s worth the trip.

Grimsby

Grimsby is the perfect spot to road trip to if you’re coming from Toronto or the GTA, as it’s just over one hour away. The town is known for its colourful “gingerbread” houses/cottages that line Grimsby Beach.

Niagara-on-the-Lake

Found in the Niagara region, this waterfront community is bursting with charm and is also one of Canada’s most historic towns. It’s located about 90 minutes from Toronto and is home to picturesque vineyards and charming boutiques.

Port Hope

This summer, it’s worth visiting Port Hope! This town is not only a wholesome destination, it’s a popular filming spot for a number of movies and TV shows. There are sandy beaches to enjoy, too.

St. Jacobs

Known for its beloved farmers’ market and Mennonite heritage, St Jacobs is located in the Waterloo area and is not too far of a drive from Toronto. Take a stroll down the streets of this quaint village and learn about its history, indulge in its one-of-a-kind shopping, and enjoy its sights.

It’s a village worth rediscovering.

Stratford

Calling all theatre lovers! Take a trip to Stratford, renowned for its world-class Shakespearean productions and theatre festival. Immerse yourself in the arts, stroll along the Avon River, and savour delicious culinary delights at one of the town’s many eateries.

Uxbridge Urban Provincial Park

Uxbridge Urban Provincial Park is a year-round nature lover’s paradise. It’s home to thrilling trails that are perfect for a peaceful escape.

This gem is located within the Township of Uxbridge and is a special retreat that offers a distinct layout, unlike traditional parks. Rather than being a single continuous expanse, it is made up of multiple “individual parcels” of land, creating a unique patchwork of green spaces.

And there you have it! Go out and explore.
