Embark on an outdoor learning pathway at one of Calgary’s favourite parks

9 June 20252 Mins Read

It’s safe to say that Prince’s Island Park is one of Calgary’s most beloved outdoor locations. Since its development in the 1950s, Prince’s Island Park has been a highly used downtown space. This was especially the case following a series of renovations in 1999, which included wetland construction and native plant restoration.

The importance of wetlands

Today, Calgarians can learn a thing or two about the area by embarking on a stroll along the Chevron Learning Pathway, which was erected in 2003 as a way of educating people of all ages about the importance of protecting and caring for the natural environment.

The walk itself is less than one kilometre and is on a paved, level path. This makes it an easy option for most skill levels and abilities. Along the way, you’ll see educational signage that’ll teach you about the wildlife, habitat, and water quality of the area.

For example, did you know that the wetland helps prevent contaminants in stormwater runoff from entering the Bow River, removing 90 per cent of sediments and nitrogen, and buffering road salt in the wintertime? Keeping the Bow River clean ensures that it can continue to support wildlife habitat, provide a source of safe drinking water, and be used for a wide range of recreational activities.

More to enjoy

And of course, there are plenty of other things to discover at Prince’s Island Park. Enjoy lush flower gardens, scenic paths, picnic areas, and playgrounds. If you’re craving a luxurious lunch or dinner, the full-service River Cafe is one of Canada’s 100 best restaurants, and a taste of their seasonal menu will explain why. Is there a better way to spend a gorgeous summer day than with a walk through nature and a delicious meal?

Be sure to check out the Chevron Learning Pathway during your next visit to Prince’s Island Park to leave with a new arsenal of fun facts and an appreciation for Calgary’s wetlands.

Where: 4th Street and 1st Avenue SW
