Endgame’s all-time box office record

3 August 20262 Mins Read

Spider-Man: Brand New Day just barely couldn’t beat Avengers: Endgame to become the highest-grossing opening weekend of all time in the United States. Still, its $355 million gross speaks to the eternal popularity of Spider-Man and proves that people will still go to theaters to see a great movie about a character they love.

Getting more specific with the numbers, Deadline estimates that Spider-Man: Brand New Day made $355 million at the domestic box office this weekend. That’s just under the $357 million record previously set by Avengers: Endgame in 2019, which was pre-pandemic and when superhero movies were at the height of their popularity. It’s also possible the final reported gross comes in above estimates tomorrow and does surpass the last Avengers movie. We’ll update this article if that happens.

We had a good feeling about the latest Spider-Man film when it had the biggest opening day of all time, and things only improved from there. As superheroes have mostly fallen out of favor with critics and theater audiences, it seemed unlikely that any movie could come close to surmounting Avengers: Endgame’s impressive opening.

Brand New Day proves that Spider-Man is one of those characters who will draw people to theaters no matter what. Impressively, each new MCU-set Spider-Man movie has grossed more than the last on its opening weekend, another impressive feat that is very uncommon in franchises.

It certainly helps that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a great movie that stands on its own. Polygon’s review praised the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed flick, calling it a “grounded, emotional, and expertly crafted addition to the Spidey canon.” Now, we’ll just have to wait and see if Avengers: Doomsday can carry on this box office momentum in December.

Surprisingly, The Odyssey also held very strong despite the massive competition posed by something as successful as Spider-Man: Brand New Day. If you’re curious about how other movies did at the domestic box office this weekend, you can see Deadline’s current list of the weekend’s top ten highest-grossing films below:

  1. Spider-Man: Brand New Day: $355 million
  2. The Odyssey: $51 million
  3. Toy Story 5: $6.2 million
  4. Minions & Monsters: $5.6 million
  5. Moana: $5.3 million
  6. Hadestown: $2 million
  7. The Invite: $1.1 million
  8. I Want Your Sex: $570,000
  9. Evil Dead Burn: $527,000
  10. Obsession: $450,000
