LISTEN TO THE PLUGGED IN SHOW, EPISODE 286
I don’t know what the weather is like where you live. But at Plugged In’s Colorado headquarters, it’s pretty beautiful. The sun is shining, the trees are leafing out, the temperature is creeping up into the 70s. Yep, summertime is almost upon us.
And for kids and teens, that just might mean spending the next two months inside, staring at screens.
I know, I know. That sounds counterintuitive, doesn’t it? But it’s true. Studies show that screen time typically goes up for youth—sometimes way up—during the summer. With no school to worry about and with many parents still away at work, kids have plenty of unsupervised time to spend. And (as many a parent already knows) they’d often rather spend that time on a screen than anywhere else.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. I sit down with Kennedy Unthank and Jonathan McKee and discuss strategies to help keep your kids’ screen time down and their summer enjoyment up.
And then, Kennedy and I talk about some folks who are making good use of screens. I’m talking about Christians on YouTube. Some of them talk to their viewers about Christianity itself, dissecting theological arguments and answering prickly spiritual questions. For others, their channel isn’t about their faith, but it still seeps into the edges all the same.
So click on the link above and join us, won’t you? And then chime in with your own thoughts. Are you a parent worried about your child’s screen time over the summer? Are you a kid wondering how to spend your time? Do you have a favorite Christian YouTuber that you like to watch—and you think we should review?
Let us know on Instagram, Facebook and, of course, on YouTube. Or leave us a message at The Plugged In Show homepage. Write us a note at [email protected]. Or let us know what you think in the comments section below. We’d love to hear from you.
And check in with us next week, when we talk with Melanie Hempe, founder of ScreenStrong.org, and Focus on the Family’s own Dr. Danny Huerta, about just why screen time is so appealing. Not just for kids, but for adults, too. You won’t want to miss it.
