Episode 294: Is Superman Just Too Good? Plus, a Super-Important Announcement, Best TV Shows to Binge Watch

LISTEN TO THE PLUGGED IN SHOW, EPISODE 294

Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! Who is it? Superman, of course.

But even that little introduction reminds us that Superman isn’t just fast and strong: He’s old, too. That introduction was originally used back in the 1940s as part of the Superman radio show—marking the phrase as probably older than some of your grandparents.

Really, does anyone use locomotives as a measure of strength these days? In an age of instantaneous global communication, doesn’t a speeding bullet feel a little … slow? And does that make Superman—who returns to theaters this weekend—a little long-in-the-tooth for our times?

I talk about that with Bob Hoose and Bret Eckelberry, two folks who know their Superman lore and have some very definite opinions on the character.

Speaking of old, Nintendo’s Mario Kart franchise has been around since 1992. It’s now on its 11th incarnation: Mario Kart World, made for Nintendo’s shiny new console, the Switch 2. Does the new game come with new bells and whistles? And more concerningly, is it carting around any new problems? Hoose has reviewed the game, and he’ll tell us all about it.

And then, before we let you go, we have a secret to share. What is it? I’m not telling here, because you never know who might be looking over your shoulder. You’ll just have to listen to find out.

Once you’re done listening, talk to us! Or write to us, whatever you’d prefer. We’ll take your thoughts any way you’d like to send them: On Facebook, Instagram or YouTube. Via email to [email protected]. Leave a voicemail at The Plugged In Show homepage. Or comment below!

And oh, by the way, thanks for hanging out with us. Be sure to join us again next week when we discuss something called the “Jesus Glow.” And we’ll discuss everyone’s favorite collective of blue gnome-like creatures, the Smurfs. You’ll want to come back for those discussions on our next Plugged In Show.
