Look, everyone’s idea of a perfect holiday is completely different. But we’d be willing to bet a good number of travellers simply want to switch off and get away from it all, as the saying goes. And where’s best to do that? Well, a beach, of course. With nothing to disturb you except the sound of crashing waves, there’s no better place for a bit of R&R.
Europe’s coastlines are packed with gorgeous beaches, but finding that perfect under-the-radar spot can be quite the challenge. Fortunately, has done the hard work for you and revealed its most underrated beach in Europe for escaping the crowds. And it’s not in classic beach destinations like Spain, Greece or Portugal – in fact, it’s in Croatia.
Located away from the main bustling centre of Hvar is the small fishing village of Zavala, which stretches from the sea into the hills. There, you’ll find a practically untouched beach, which makes up for its lack of amenities with plenty of natural beauty. Not only are there crystal-blue seas, but the village is surrounded by olive trees, vineyards and lavender and rosemary bushes.
Zavala remained off the tourist map because it was previously a bit trickier than other beaches to reach, but the completion of the Pitve-Zavala tunnel, which opened up the southern stretch of the island, has changed that. And if Zavala gets too busy? Take a trip to neighbouring Šćedro, an island home to just a handful of people.
Elsewhere on the list is a Spanish sinkhole and an off-the-radar Greek island. Intrigued?
