Everything to know about Vancouver’s iconic Polar Bear Swim on New Year’s Day

25 December 20252 Mins Read

The 106th annual Polar Bear Swim is coming up in Vancouver, which means it’s almost time to storm English Bay for an icy dip to ring in the new year.

The beloved tradition dates all the way back to 1920, when Peter Pantages and nine other swimmers decided to brave the waters of English Bay. Today, it’s by far the most popular way to celebrate New Year’s Day, with hundreds—if not thousands—of attendees plunging every year. The tradition has even spilled over to Kits, Second, and Jericho Beaches, as space to plunge and retreat becomes ever-scarce. Trust us, we can attest to that.

The swim at English Bay also comes with live DJs and food truck festivities to help motivate plungers and warm them up post-swim.

When will the swim start?

On Jan. 1, 2025, the annual swim will run from noon to 4 p.m., with the official swim scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Those interested in participating can register online to receive their participation certificate upon completion of the Polar Bear Swim. Or you could always just show up on New Year’s Day if you’re feeling spontaneous.

Note that swimmers entering the 100-yard race should meet behind the start line, and the first three swimmers to touch the marker buoy should give their names to the lifeguard.

Once the swim is complete, indoor spaces will be available for swimmers to change their clothes, including changing rooms, washrooms, lockers, or warming tents.

However, the City of Vancouver recommends coming swim-ready, as the beach is jam-packed with swimmers every year.

After the swim, participants can pick up their commemorative button at the centre-tower Family Zone or one of the Information Tents scattered throughout the beach.

Mark your calendars, bring a buddy, and kick off the new year the best way we know how.

When: Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026
Time: Noon to 4 p.m.
Where: English Bay
Cost: Free admission
