Shark movie Under Paris, which became one of the most-viewed titles of 2024 and the second Non-English film most-watched launch on Netflix history, is gaining momentum with a new director and rumors of an ongoing shoot. Here’s the latest as of March 2026.
Ever since its launch in France, Netflix has barely franchised its original movies with the notable exceptions of the Lost Bullet trilogy starring Alban Lenoir. This will soon change, as significant progress has been reported on sequels to two of the recent French productions. A new chapter of Family Pack, an anthology sequel based on the same social deduction board game, has just been confirmed and is gearing up for production soon.
But the bigger—and arguably more anticipated—movie is a sequel to Under Paris, which posted huge viewership numbers in the summer of 2024 and spent 21 weeks in the Netflix Global Top 10 Non-English Films chart.
While there has been widespread reporting, a sequel has yet to be officially confirmed by Netflix. However, the lead actress, Bérénice Béjo, spoke about a planned shoot for September 2025 in late 2024, though it never came to fruition.
The project’s status remained blurry until the Hollywood Reporter and its Heat Vision section reported in early February of 2026 that Alexandre Aja was closing a deal to helm the sequel. THR was unable to confirm exactly how the handover from Gens occurred or who was writing the script for the sequel, and Netflix had no comment. Regardless, Aja certainly has robust experience with creature features and tough underwater shoots, helming Piranha 3D and 2019’s Crawl.

In recent days, casting calls came out on French websites for extras and stunt doubles for a planned late March shoot of sequences for the reported sequel, such as this one (h/t TheNerdShepherd). The casting calls also feature the working title Paris Sous Les Eaux, which translates to Paris Under Water, hinting that the movie will focus on the dire consequences of a massive Parisian flood. It also notes that the movie will be shot in both Paris and Marseille.
In either case, Netflix has kept mum about the project’s progress for the past several months, and Alexandre Aja himself has yet to confirm his involvement. Creative details may also turn out to be incorrect, as the next Family Pack movie was initially assumed to be a direct continuation until it was clarified that an anthology sequel, Family Pack 2: Renaissance, is instead dropping a brand-new cast into the year 1515.
