Everything You Need To Know About The Former Starz Drama Heading to Netflix

An adaptation of May Cobb’s novel, The Hunting Wives, has been in development at Starz for some time but will now be exclusively released on Netflix, starting in July 2025. We’ve got your first look and everything you need to know about the new series.

As first reported by Deadline, Netflix will host the show exclusively after Lionsgate and Starz officially separate and head their separate ways. It comes as Netflix licenses a number of shows from Lionsgate Television in the United States, including Hightown and Son of a Critch.

Lionsgate Television reacquired the rights to The Hunting Wives from Starz as part of their separation agreement, believing the series had stronger multi-season potential elsewhere rather than as the limited series Starz had planned. Starz, now focusing on fully owned or co-produced content, agreed to the move, while Lionsgate struck a one-year exclusive deal with Netflix and is actively selling the series to international buyers.

Although exclusive to Netflix, it will not be carrying the Netflix Original branding. It’ll debut on Netflix in full beginning July 21st, 2025.

Here’s what else you need to know about The Hunting Wives.

What’s The Hunting Wives about?

Coming from showrunner Rebecca Cutter, best known for working on series like Hightown, Gotham, and The Mentalist, the story centers on Sophie O’Neil, who has moved to Eastern Texas after having previously lived a lavish life on the East Coast, and quickly becomes part of a new clique of housewives.

The full book synopsis, which serves as the basis for the series, reads:

“Sophie O’Neill left behind an envy-inspiring career and the stressful, competitive life of big-city Chicago to settle down with her husband and young son in a small Texas town. It seems like the perfect life with a beautiful home in an idyllic rural community. But Sophie soon realizes that life is now too quiet, and she’s feeling bored and restless.

Then she meets Margot Banks, an alluring socialite who is part of an elite clique secretly known as the Hunting Wives. Sophie finds herself completely drawn to Margot and swept into her mysterious world of late-night target practice and dangerous partying. As Sophie’s curiosity gives way to full-blown obsession, she slips farther away from the safety of her family and deeper into this nest of vipers.

When the body of a teenage girl is discovered in the woods where the Hunting Wives meet, Sophie finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation and her life spiraling out of control.”

Season 1 of the show consists of eight episodes in total, with Jeff Danna providing the soundtrack for the show. Filming took place from April 2024 and was primarily shot in North Carolina.
