Expedia Group has introduced Comet, an AI-powered travel browser developed in partnership with Perplexity. This new tool aims to streamline travel planning by integrating conversational search, trip planning, and loyalty rewards into a single platform. With the launch, Expedia offers travelers Silver status in its OneKey loyalty program as an incentive to download and use the browser.
Features of Comet
Comet is designed to simplify the travel planning process by allowing users to compare destinations, evaluate travel elements such as hotels, and receive personalized itinerary recommendations. The browser features a “Travel” interface under the Home tab, which includes sections such as “Trending Destinations” and “Inspiration,” along with a search bar for ease of use. Currently available on desktop, the mobile version of Comet is expected to launch soon.
Strategic Partnership and Market Trends
The collaboration between Expedia and Perplexity comes at a time when generative AI is gaining traction among consumers, particularly in the travel sector. Clayton Nelson, VP of Strategic Partnerships for Expedia Group, highlighted the growing trend of consumer search behavior shifting towards generative AI search engines. He emphasized that Comet simplifies the often complex and time-consuming nature of travel planning by combining natural language search with AI capabilities.
Integration with Other Platforms
Expedia’s commitment to AI is further demonstrated by its partnerships with other technology platforms. The company has collaborated with OpenAI to launch apps within ChatGPT, enabling users to interact with the applications directly; however, this feature is currently unavailable to users in the EU. Other major travel companies, including Booking.com, Tripadvisor, and Uber, are expected to join this initiative later in the year.
Previous AI Initiatives
Expedia has been proactive in integrating AI into its services. Earlier this year, the company announced several AI-driven updates, including an integration with OpenAI’s Operator and Microsoft Copilot Actions, as well as the introduction of an AI agent on Hotels.com. In 2023, Expedia was among the first to incorporate generative AI by adding a ChatGPT plugin and a large language model into its app. In September, the company further enhanced its offerings by introducing a natural language interface to its Expedia, Vrbo, and Hotels.com apps.
