Experience these free museums in and around Calgary

30 July 20253 Mins Read

When was the last time you were at a museum?

Whether you’re looking to escape the rain, want to try something new, or need a summer activity that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, museums are the way to go. There are so many free options in and around Calgary, and with the Canada Strong Pass offering free and discounted admission to national and provincial museums, there’s even more to explore.

Here are some free and discounted museums in and around Calgary to check out this summer.

The Esker Foundation is one of Calgary’s leading contemporary art galleries and features all sorts of seasonal exhibits, permanent pieces, and unique programming. Swing by the next time you’re in Inglewood – there’s always something to discover!

Where: 1011 9th Ave. SE, Calgary

Don’t let the name fool you — this gallery was one of the first artist-run centres established in Canada and has been in operation since 1975. The New Gallery provides venues and opportunities for local artists while engaging and educating visitors through artist-run culture and contemporary art. Check out the website to see what’s on.

Where: 208 Centre St. S., Calgary

This museum showcases replicas of rare Chinese artifacts, works from local artists, and the history of Chinese-Canadians in Canada. See why thousands of tourists and students visit the Culture Centre each year.

Where: 197 1st St. SW, Calgary

This not-for-profit gallery hosts student-run installations, group shows, and exhibitions in the main mall at AUArts. Although the gallery is currently on summer break, you can expect it to be back in full swing come fall, so keep your eyes peeled for exciting announcements.

Where: 1407 14th Ave. NW, Calgary

Experience the past, present, and future at this historic Calgary home. One of Canada’s last prairie sandstone mansions, the iconic Lougheed House has been revived into a vibrant social hub for exploration, events, and, of course, learning. Visitors under the age of 25 can enjoy free or reduced admission until Sept. 2, 2025, with the Canada Strong Pass.

Where: 707 13th Ave. SW, Calgary

Visit Canada’s first commercial oilfield and processing plant in Diamond Valley. You can explore the birthplace of Alberta’s petroleum industry through guided tours, and visitors under the age of 25 can enjoy free or reduced admission until September 2, 2025, with the Canada Strong Pass.

Where: Sunset Boulevard SE, Diamond Valley
