It’s a big day for fans of Fallout 76, though it’s certainly not going like they hoped. Tuesday brings with it the Burning Springs update to the post-apocalyptic MMO. It’s the biggest map update since the launch of Fallout 76, launches a new season of content and rewards, and even includes the arrival of The Ghoul, as played by Walton Goggins on Prime Video’s Fallout series. And while that all sounds great, people are having a hard time actually playing it.
While the update for the game was released earlier this morning, the servers weren’t announced as going back online until 2:40 p.m. EST on Bethesda’s Discord. “Servers are being opened. We’ll see you in Burning Springs,” a moderator posted. “If you have any issues, please wait a few minutes before trying to login again.”
Well, many people have tried that to no avail. Most were unable to get past the initial loading screen, though some Discord users in Australia said they managed to sign in at some point. The same moderator chimed in again just over 20 minutes later, adding, “We’re aware that there are some issues logging into the game at the moment. Team is looking into it.”
Shortly after those messages, Bethesda updated its server status portal to note that Fallout 76 was offline, with a full server outage. Now, fans around the world are taking to the Bethesda Discord channel and Fallout 76 subreddit to register their sadness, anxious anticipation, and yearning to visit Fallout’s version of Ohio.
In the meantime, if you’re a Fallout 76 player looking to explore the new expansion when the servers return, first make sure you’ve downloaded the update. The last thing you want is for servers to finally return, only for you to have a 40 GB download.
Polygon has reached out to Bethesda for an update on the status of Fallout 76 and will update when the company responds.
