Family Travel Outfit Ideas for 2026

kids plane outfits

Traveling with kids has taught me one thing: the airport is not the place to sacrifice comfort for style.

Between hauling carry-ons, navigating security lines, managing snacks, and keeping little travelers entertained, the right outfit can make a surprisingly big difference. The best airport outfits for families are the ones that keep everyone comfortable from the drive to the airport all the way through baggage claim.

Whether you’re heading out for spring break, flying to visit grandparents, or taking a long-awaited family vacation, here’s what to wear to the airport with kids in 2026.

Start with soft, breathable fabrics

If you’ve ever spent hours on a plane in uncomfortable clothing, you already know how important fabric can be. That’s especially true for kids.

Airports and airplanes can go from warm to freezing in a matter of minutes, and children often alternate between running through terminals and falling asleep in your lap. Soft, breathable fabrics help keep everyone comfortable throughout the day without constant outfit changes.

Many families gravitate toward stretchy, lightweight materials that allow kids to move freely while still looking put together for travel photos and vacation memories.

Layers are your airport bestie

One of the biggest mistakes I made when traveling with young kids was dressing everyone for the weather outside our house.

The reality is that airports, airplanes, and destinations can all feel completely different.

That’s why layering is one of the easiest ways to make travel days more comfortable.

A simple airport outfit usually includes:

  • A soft T-shirt or long-sleeve top
  • Leggings or joggers
  • A lightweight hoodie or zip-up jacket
  • Comfortable sneakers

Layers can be added or removed throughout the day, making it easier to adjust to changing temperatures without overpacking.

Wear bamboo matching sets for easier travel

Matching family pajama sets have become my surprisingly practical go-to for airport travel. I think they’re a great choice for parents who put comfort first but don’t want to sacrifice looking (somewhat) put-together. Plus, you can choose a cute print based on your destination!

If you’re flying out early-morning, have a red-eye, bamboo pajamas are a must. The fabric is soft and breathable, which makes a big difference when you’re sitting on a plane for hours (I’ve learned my lesson).

I’ve found the sets from Little Sleepies travel best, because the bamboo material holds up throughout the day, and it’s breathable in crowded terminals. Also, I think it helps us keep track of everyone in a chaotic airport when you’re all wearing the same print.

Who doesn’t love a fresh PJs set to commemorate a family trip?

Whatever you do, don’t overlook comfortable shoes

I used to underestimate how much walking we’d actually be doing in the terminal. Turns out, airport gates are always further away than they look.

Now, my number one rule is that the whole family wears shoes that are supportive but, most importantly, easy to get on and off at security.

I swear by slip-ons or cushioned sneakers for everyone. I personally swear by my Birks.

And for the little ones? Skip the laces entirely. If you’ve ever had to hold a boarding pass, a backpack, and a squirming toddler while desperately trying to retie their shoes in the security line, you know exactly why I’m saying this. Save yourself the stress!

Pack for the plane, not just the destination.

It doesn’t matter if your final destination is tropical; planes have a way of getting chilly once you’re at 30,000 feet.

Before you hear the final boarding call, double-check that your family has these cozy must-haves within reach:

  • A packable, lightweight throw blanket
  • Pairs of plush, soft socks
  • A supportive neck or travel pillow
  • A zip-up hoodie or comfy sweatshirt

When kids feel snug and warm, they’re much more likely to settle in for a nap, and we all know a sleeping traveler makes for a much smoother flight for everyone.

Always bring a backup

We’ve all been there. A mid-flight juice spill or an unexpected accident right before takeoff can turn a calm travel day into a scramble. Having a backup outfit tucked into your carry-on isn’t just smart planning; it’s pure peace of mind.

I recommend keeping a small pouch packed with:

  • A clean shirt
  • Extra bottoms
  • A fresh pair of socks and underwear
  • A lightweight layer

And a pro-tip: if you’re traveling with a baby or toddler, always toss in an extra shirt for yourself, too
