In the canceled TV series, Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup were played by Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron and Yana Perrault, respectively, while Donald Faison played Professor Utonium and the original cartoon’s narrator, Tom Kenny, returned for the same role.
The unearthed trailer depicted the three superheroes as adults, with their lives thrown into disarray after they accidentally killed their archenemy, Mojo. After, they split up and tried to live their own lives, only to reunite in Townsville seven years later.

Fans on social media immediately shared their honest thoughts on the trailer, with many happy that it was canceled.
“Wow the rumors didn’t do justice on how bad it actually was,” wrote one person, as more said, “God bless everyone involved in the decision to cancel this show,” and “I was not prepared for how horrendous this is. I thought I was. But I really wasn’t.”
Another declared, “WE DODGED A MISSILE,” as someone else questioned why The CW, around the time that it was filled with popular superhero dramas, struggled with this series, saying, “Peak CW super hero era but somehow doesn’t look like it’d fit in even there 😬.”
But there were also a few fans of the trailer mixed in, such as those who wrote, “ngl i would’ve watched this” and “wait this is camp im sad it got cancelled now.”
A third wrote, “I actually want to see a full series of this after the trailer. It’s so different from the cartoon and the right kind of car crash TV that I would want to watch just to see what insane thing happened next. It’s like the power puff girls, meets Hancock meets gossip girl.”
Despite the few people who shared interest in seeing a full series, it seemed like the consensus leaned more towards disappointment in the trailer and relief that the show got canceled.
After the cancellation was announced, co-writer Diablo Cody, the mind behind Juno and Jennifer’s Body, shared her thoughts on the show, telling TheWrap, “There were honestly a lot of issues. It’s a bummer.”
Cody went on, “I think just in general, making the Powerpuff Girls adults was a challenge because it would have probably been easier to just do a straight live-action adaptation of the existing show. But we wanted to do something kind of weird.”
The live-action adaptation was first announced as in development in 2020, with production starting in April 2021. However, only a month later, the show was reportedly getting reworked, and after a few other developments over the next couple of years, it was officially canceled in early 2023.
