‘Fargo’ Actor Dead at 83

Scott Hylands played Detective Kevin “OB” O’Brien in Night Heat, a police crime drama that aired on CBS from 1985 until 1989. He also played the role of Ennis Stussy in the television adaptation of Fargo, and Father Travis in V. Hylands died on July 29. He was 83.

“Husband, Father, Actor, Director, Writer, Storyteller, Friend, and lover of life,” his son Luke posted to Instagram earlier this week. “I am heartbroken to share the news that my Dad Scott has passed away Wednesday night. Myself and my family are still trying to process this horrible loss. There simply are not enough words I can say about you right now. You are my forever hero and my best friend. Always and forever. I love you. Goodbye Dad.”

Hylands, who was born in Canada in 1943, originally studied zoology before transferring to theater arts. He officially began his acting career in an off-Broadway production of Billy Liar.

According to his IMDb page, “His performance drew the attention of the noted director William Ball, who was just forming the American Conservatory Theatre (San Francisco). Scott became one of the original company members of the ACT, appearing in over twenty productions, Death of a Salesman to Beyond the Fringe, King Lear to Charley’s Aunt. While his film test for the Antonioni film Zabriskie Point didn’t get him the part, it led him to another film, Daddy’s Gone A-Hunting, which introduced him.”

Hylands also appeared in many different TV shows and films over the years, including NYPD Blue, The X-Files, Supernatural, Stargate SG-1, Earthquake, Slipstream, Fools, Operation Snafu, Bittersweet Love, and The Boys in Company C.

Family, friends, and fans have been sharing their condolences. One said, “So sorry, Luke. I can tell from the photos and videos you shared, you had a beautiful bond together and the way he looked at you… so lucky to have that captured forever.” Another said, “So sorry for your loss. A beautiful tribute to a beautiful man. Stay strong. Sending all my love to you and your family.”

Hylands is survived by his wife Veronica, his son Luke, and his daughter Rebecca.
