Final Destination: Bloodlines debuted in May and quickly became the most successful film in the 15-year-old franchise; now the hit is coming to HBO Max on Aug. 1.
This reboot of the long-running franchise, where death hunts down those who once escaped it using intricate traps, centers on the family of a woman whose life was spared by a premonition in 1969. Decades later, her descendants, who were never meant to exist, begin to die in a series of improbable accidents.
If you didn’t catch the movie when it premiered in theaters in May, now’s your chance to see Tony Todd as mortician William Bludworth, in one of his final roles before his passing in 2024. “He really wanted to be in this movie,” co-director Zach Lipovsky told Polygon. “He was sick when we were developing the film, and we were worried he wouldn’t be well enough [by the time we were shooting], but he really, really wanted to be there. And we wanted to craft a narrative around him, to give him a bit more of an origin story, to fill him out as a character.”
Although this home release won’t include some of the IMAX shots that were used when death arrives to claim a victim, the film’s story of a family being stalked by the Grim Reaper has a stronger emotional connection between the audience and the cast than ever before. Instead of being vessels in which creative death sequences can take place, like in previous installments, in Bloodlines, they are characters that folks can gravitate toward.
Final Destination: Bloodlines is poised to be remembered as one of 2025’s standout horror films, not just for its shocking twists, but for successfully resurrecting one of the 2000s’ most iconic horror franchises.
