First Looks and April Premiere Set for Netflix Shark Thriller With New Title

Tommy Wirkola is bringing his signature brand of bloody mayhem to Netflix. Originally set for theaters via Sony Pictures, the shark-infested hurricane thriller, now officially titled Thrash, is heading exclusively to Netflix globally on April 10th, 2026. Here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know about the upcoming movie starring Phoebe Dynevor, Whitney Peak, and Djimon Hounsou.

If you’ve been tracking Sony’s release calendar over the past year, you might have noticed a game of musical chairs with this particular project. First announced under the working title Beneath the Storm, the film was originally slated for a theatrical release on August 1st before being bumped up to July 3rd under the new title, Shiver.

However, the movie was completely pulled from Sony’s theatrical slate earlier this year. The reason why isn’t entirely clear although it was quickly announced that it would be changing title. That’s likely because of a clash with Tim Miller’s time loop shark thriller (also called Shiver) left the film temporarily untitled, but more importantly, Sony opted to send the movie directly to streaming.

Producer Adam McKay (Don’t Look Up) expressed his enthusiasm for the pivot to streaming earlier this year, stating:

“We couldn’t be more excited to be back in business with all our friends at Netflix on this film. We had a great experience together on Don’t Look Up and look forward to working with them to make this an event streaming release in 2026.”

Here is everything else we know about Thrash so far:

What is the plot of Thrash?

If you loved Crawl but thought it needed more fins and fewer gators, this sounds right up your alley.

Plot details were kept tightly under wraps during production, but we now have an official synopsis for the film:

“Amidst a catastrophic hurricane, a coastal town battles nature’s wrath and an onslaught of sharks. Braving torrential rain, debris, and darkness, they unite to survive the deadly predators and make it through the storm.”

Who is in the cast for Netflix’s Thrash?

Netflix subscribers will be very familiar with the film’s leading lady. Phoebe Dynevor, who broke out as Daphne in Netflix’s smash-hit Bridgerton and recently starred in the acclaimed Netflix thriller Fair Play, is leading the cast.

She is joined by:

  • Whitney Peak (Hocus Pocus 2, Molly’s Game)
  • Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place: Part II, Blood Diamond, and Netflix’s Rebel Moon)
  • Alyla Browne (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga)
  • Stacy Clausen (Crazy Fun Park)
  • Costa D’Angelo (Crazy Fun Park)
  • Amy Mathews (The Twelve)
  • Elijah Ungvary (A Quiet Place: Day One)
  • Dante Ubaldi
  • Jon Prasida (Kung Fu)
  • Gemma Dart (Ten Pound Poms)
  • Akosia Sabet (Winchester)
  • Sian Luxford
  • Sami Afuni (Godzilla x Kong: Supernova)

Who is behind the movie?

Tommy Wirkola is serving as both the writer and director for the feature. Wirkola is no stranger to high-concept, violent thrills, having helmed the Nazi-zombie cult classic Dead Snow, the Hansel and Gretel reimagining Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, and the recent holiday actioner Violent Night.

The movie is being produced by Adam McKay and Kevin J. Messick through their HyperObject Industries banner, alongside Wirkola.

Behind the camera, the crew features:

  • Matthew Weston (Cinematographer)
  • Daniel Futcher (Composer)
  • David Ingram (Production Designer)
  • Jim Page and Martin Stoltz (Editors)
  • Ashley Marks (Casting Director)

It’s also worth noting the film was heavily shot on location down in Australia, with locations mostly around Melbourne, including Docklands Studios, Canterbury, Mount Macedon, and Mornington Pier.

What is the MPAA rating?

Don’t expect a family-friendly shark romp. Thrash has been Rated R for bloody violent content, some grisly images, and language

When will Thrash release on Netflix?

Before Sony pulled it from their calendar, it was scheduled for a July 3rd, 2026 theatrical drop, and we’ll thankfully be getting it a big sooner than that scheduled date, with Friday, April 10th, 2026 set.

We’ll keep you posted as soon as Netflix drops a trailer or an official release date.
