Fortnite is set to bring more pets to the fray, a new leak suggests. Datamined images pulled from Thursday’s season update have hit the internet, showing off an array of animals that appear to be new companion cosmetics. Pictures of a Cuddle Team leader animal, a skateboarding turtle, two pugs, and a golden retriever are making the rounds on social media, with the latter companion looking very familiar.
Fans of the battle royale game probably remember the golden retriever from its debut, when pet backblings were introduced in Fortnite‘s 2018 season 6 update. The new feature made its debut with three pets available to players, including an iguana named Camo and a dragon named Scales, and was included in the season’s Battle Pass.
As of Friday, 17 pets have been added to Fortnite, with special collaboration characters being listed as companions, such as Marvel’s Rocket Raccoon, Grogu from the Mandalorian, and even Claptrap from the Borderlands franchise. If you’re wondering whether these pets had any other function outside of being the goodest boy or girl, the answer is no, they didn’t. However, with Epic Games seemingly gearing up to bring forth more pet-like companions, the way that these creatures function during battle could change.
According to a credible leaker, it appears that the companion concept will be reworked, allowing pets to interact in battle with “special gameplay” mechanics. Players will also be able to allegedly “feed, pet, brush, and play minigames” with the companions through to-be-revealed new items. These aforementioned companions are rumored to be arriving later in Fortnite’s new season.
Fortnite’s season 6 chapter 4 update, Shock ‘N Awesome, was released on Aug. 7. A new battle pass centered around the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers and more Halo costumes arrived with the new update, along with new weapons and items to loot around the island.
