Free outdoor yoga classes are popping up all over Toronto and some have waterfront views, Canada Reviews

21 July 20265 Mins Read

Free yoga sessions are popping up in parks and public spaces all over Toronto this summer, and, as long as the air quality cooperates, they’re the perfect excuse to swap the studio for some fresh air. Of course, lake breezes and sunset views while downward dogging are just bonuses!

From waterfront flows to yoga among lavender blooms, here are some free yoga experiences happening throughout the city this summer (just remember to bring a yoga mat, a water bottle and some sun protection).

Yoga in Trillium Park

Where: Trillium Park, 955 Lake Shore Blvd. W.

When: Some Saturdays and Sundays at 10 a.m., through Sep. 27

Roll out your mat at Trillium Park throughout the summer if you want waterfront views as your morning-stretch backdrop. Free outdoor classes take place on most Saturdays and Sundays from 10–11 a.m. until Sep. 27, with no registration required. Along with regular yoga classes, the schedule mixes in special sessions, like Yoga Pilates Fusion (July 25), Yoga Dance Parties (July 26, Aug. 16) and Yoga Fitness Fusion and Acro Fusion classes (Aug. 30, Sep. 12).

Yoga by the Lake at Harbour Square Park

Where: Harbour Square Park, 25 Queens Quay W.

When: July 25, Aug. 1 and Aug. 8, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Yoga by the Lake takes over Harbour Square Park on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., with the classes taking place near the boardwalk (bonus: you’ll practically be right beside Lake Ontario!). Certified yoga teacher Astrid Moulin hosts the hour-long sessions, and the classes are designed for all experience levels, so you don’t need to be an experienced yogi or anything to join. Classes are free, but registration opens seven days before each session (walk-ins aren’t accepted because classes are capped at 20 participants).

Sunset Yoga at Coronation Park

Where: Coronation Park, 711 Lake Shore Blvd. W.

When: Saturday, July 25, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. (doors open at 5:50 p.m.)

Not a morning person? There’s a free golden-hour yoga session coming to Toronto’s waterfront this weekend! This all-levels class takes place on the main lawn near the pavilion, with Lake Ontario as the backdrop. It’s all about slowing down, stretching and enjoying the park during golden hour (so, a perfect post-work event). You can also stick around after the class for an optional coffee meetup nearby if you’re keen on turning your evening into a more social outing. This class is for women only.

Free Yoga at Aga Khan Park

Where: Lavender Garden at Aga Khan Park, 77 Wynford Dr.

When: July 22 and July 29, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Head to Aga Khan Park and stretch it out among the lavender blooms. The park is hosting free Wellness Wednesday yoga sessions throughout June and July, with two remaining classes on July 22 and July 29 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Both beginners and more experienced yogis are welcome, and the event is completely free (you’ll just need to register ahead of time). Aga Khan Park is open until 10 p.m. during the spring and summer, so you could also stick around and explore the grounds after class.

Yoga in St. James Park

Where: St. James Park, 120 King St. E.

When: Tuesdays through Aug. 25, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

These free yoga sessions are led by the folks at The Yoga Lounge and take place on the grass behind the Michael Comstock Pavilion. You don’t need to reserve a spot, but organizers ask participants to arrive about 10 minutes early to scan a registration and waiver QR code on their phones and show the confirmation screen to the instructor.

Wild and Free Family Yoga at Downsview Park

Where: Downsview Park, 70 Canuck Ave.

When: Sunday, Aug. 16, from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in English and 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in French

Little yogis can get in on the outdoor yoga fun, too! Downsview Park has partnered with Appleseed Yoga for this Wild and Free Family Yoga series, which combines yoga poses and breathing exercises with games, songs, mindfulness and activities that family members can do together. Best of all, you don’t even have to lug extra yoga gear along for this one, as the organizers say no equipment is required! Registration is required, and pets aren’t permitted, with the exception of service animals. Anyone under 16 must attend with an adult.

Gentle Flow Yoga at the Toronto Wellness Festival, Mel Lastman Square

Where: Mel Lastman Square, 5100 Yonge St.

When: Sept. 25 to 27

So, summer is technically winding down by late September, but there’s one more free outdoor wellness experience worth keeping on your radar (bonus: this one is family-friendly). The inaugural Toronto Wellness Festival is transforming Mel Lastman Square into a free three-day event centred around yoga, sound baths, breathwork, workshops and other wellness activities.
