Frieren season 3 gets first real update in months at Anime Expo

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has swiftly become one of the most beloved fantasy anime. It’s a story that doesn’t focus on the age-old hero’s quest, but instead begins long after the storied battle of good over evil has ended. With the Demon King long buried, the series aims to ask what happens when the greatest adventure of a lifetime becomes nothing more than a memory. It’s a deceptively simple premise that has evolved into one of the medium’s most emotionally resonant stories, blending breathtaking action with a meditation on grief, friendship, and the passage of time.

Following the culmination of its second season in January and the announcement of a third slated for October 2027, fans are eager to discover what’s in store next for Frieren and her new band of adventurers. At Anime Expo, fans got a taste of how the third season is shaping up, with director Tomoya Kitagawa, supporting director Keiichiro Saito, and animation producer Yuichiro Fukushi lightly discussing what’s in store while reflecting on season 2. Character designer Keisuke Kojima also hosted a live drawing session, offering a rare glimpse into the artistic process behind one of anime’s most striking visual identities.

The panel was a beautiful deep dive into the creative evolution of the series, mainly focusing on the work that went into producing the new intro for season 2. According to Kitagawa, one small snippet at the end of the intro required a total of 1,000 drawings. The amount of dedication that goes into the series is incredible, and series creators only look to amplify that ambition twofold with the followup.

That leaves season 3 with enormous expectations. The creative team’s evolving approach to adapting the manga continues to impress viewers, and that should extend nicely with the introduction of Macht and the Golden Land. The stakes are even higher, with Frieren facing one of her most dangerous foes in a land that calls for spectacular art and background work. As is expected, the work so far is still in the early stages. Kitagawa explained that the team is busy “creating the design, concept art, and storyboard for season 3,” aiming to put even more effort into the finished production. For Kitagawa, the “mentality is always to do better every time,” which means season 3 could be one of the most exciting moments for the anime yet.

With much of the same staff returning, the core visual identity from both seasons 1 and 2 should stay intact, but the action set pieces and character moments will take special priority. Macht serving as the main villain for season 3 should give it that edge of vibrancy and intrigue. He’s not your typical baddie, but a thoughtful demon who once served as the right hand to Gluck, lord of Weis, before it was completely turned into gold. There’s a lot to be excited about, but the wait will be a long one.

In closing, Kitagawa called The Golden Land “epic and romantic,” and reassured fans “we’re going to do our best to surpass season 2.” After two acclaimed seasons, the series has established itself as one of anime’s defining works, and season 3 looks to prove itself as one of the most memorable and celebrated series in the industry.
