George Clooney Broadway Performance ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ Heads to Netflix

Netflix is bringing Broadway to your living room to kick off 2026. The streamer has acquired the rights to Good Night, and Good Luck: Live from Broadway, the filmed recording of George Clooney’s acclaimed stage debut.

The play, which had a limited run in New York earlier in 2025, was originally broadcast live on CNN as a special television event and on HBO Max (soon to be under Netflix’s wing if the acquisition completes). Now, those who missed the live airing (or the expensive ticket prices) will get a chance to see the Hollywood A-lister command the stage. Magnolia Pictures is the distributor behind the digital rights.

We can confirm that Good Night, and Good Luck: Live from Broadway will be available on Netflix in the US, the UK, and other select regions starting Wednesday, January 7th, 2026. You can find Netflix’s full lineup for January 2026 here.

This project is a unique full-circle moment for Clooney. He co-wrote, directed, and starred in the original 2005 film, which earned six Academy Award nominations.

For the 2025 stage adaptation, Clooney returned to the material but switched roles. In the movie, he played producer Fred Friendly; on Broadway, he stepped into the lead role of Edward R. Murrow, the legendary CBS journalist who famously challenged Senator Joseph McCarthy during the height of the Red Scare.

The production was noted for its unique immersive staging. Performed in black and white to mimic the aesthetic of 1950s television (and the original film), the play transforms the theater into a live TV studio, placing the audience right in the middle of the high-stakes newsroom tension.

Set in 1953, the play chronicles the real-life conflict between Murrow and Senator McCarthy. As McCarthy leads a witch hunt to root out alleged Communists in the government and media, Murrow and his dedicated team of journalists decide to take a stand, using their broadcast platform to expose the Senator’s fear-mongering tactics despite immense corporate and political pressure.

The official logline describes it as:

“A taut, historical drama about the responsibility of journalism in the face of political tyranny. As Senator Joseph McCarthy casts a shadow of fear over the nation, newsman Edward R. Murrow fights to report the truth, regardless of the consequences.”

Alongside Clooney, the Broadway production featured a talented ensemble cast bringing the CBS newsroom to life, though the streaming release highlights Clooney as the central draw. Mac Brandt, Will Dagger, Christopher Denham, Glenn Fleshler, Ilana Glazer, and Clark Gregg were amongst the cast. 

The production was directed for the stage by Tony Award winner David Cromer.

While Netflix has dabbled in filmed stage productions before (most notably Springsteen on Broadway and Diana: The Musical), high-profile straight plays are a rarity on the platform.
