Europe’s train network just keeps on growing, doesn’t it? Well, that’s certainly the case in Germany, where a new scheme will mean vast expansion across the country’s network.
FlixTrain, one of Germany’s largest operators, has announced it will begin working with train operators to connect with more regional destinations. As it stands, the company only operates long-distance routes between major cities: Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Frankfurt and Stuttgart.
Now, passengers will be able to use one ticket for those long-distance routes, and then transfer to a different operator under the same reservation. Sound familiar? That’s because a scheme in a similar format by Eurostar and Skyteam could soon mean trains and planes can be booked in one go.
The Flixtrain scheme will create new connections between Hamburg to Kiel, Lübeck or Flensburg, as well as to cities in the south like Ulm, Tübingen and Kaiserslautern.
‘From now on, around 200 additional cities can be reached with the combined tickets, which consist of a FlixTrain and a regional train journey,’ said a spokesperson from Flixtrain, according to euronews.
