Get active outdoors at Shouldice Park in Calgary’s northwest

9 May 20252 Mins Read

Real talk: You’re never too old for playing outside. Especially when Calgary has so many magnificent parks and outdoor facilities!

One such area is northwest Calgary’s Shouldice Park. This park combines athletic facilities and outdoor amenities for an impeccable spring and summer vibe.

But first, a brief history lesson. The park’s namesake, James Shouldice, was an early farmer who donated the land to the city under the condition that it be made into a park. When James passed away in 1925, the land sat untouched for 40 years. It was finally developed into a park in the late 60s. Now a hubbub of activity, it’s safe to say that James would be pleased with the park’s outcome.

Game time

As a major athletic park, Shouldice Park is home to nearly every game turf you can imagine. We’re talking eight baseball diamonds, four grass sports fields, a basketball court, a private batting cage, tennis courts, and an indoor pool.

Challenge your friends to a friendly match or find a rec league to rediscover the sports you loved as a child. Bring a ball and have a ball at these free and bookable spots.

The art of play

Shouldice Park is also home to an impressive 16,000 square feet accessible playground. Constructed in 2018, the imaginative and accessible space set a new standard for inclusive play. After all, kids of all abilities should be able to play and have fun together. The playground was even awarded Best Accessible/Inclusive Experience for Kids by readers of Calgary’s Child Magazine in 2022.

And, like any classic Calgary public park, Shouldice Park has picnic sites, fire pits, BBQ stands, and Bow River access. It’s easy to pack some water and snacks and enjoy a full day outdoors playing sports, dipping your toes in the river, and spending quality time with family or friends.

Have fun!
