Sure, you’ve probably been on an aeroplane before – but what about a seaplane?
For the first time ever, an operator called Hellenic Seaplanes has created an air link between Greece and Albania in what could well be the start of a whole new transport network for the region.
It’s been made possible thanks to an official invitation from Albanian authorities and is an indicator of more to come in regards to cooperation and maritime infrastructure. This particular link connects Ioannina in northwestern Greece to the coastal city of Vlorë in Albania, considered the gateway to the Albanian Riviera.
According to euronews, the seaplane network will enhance tourism in the Adriatic and Ionian regions by connecting coastal cities, islands and other popular destinations.
What is a seaplane?
Unlike regular old aeroplanes which land on… well, land, seaplanes are designed to take off and land on the sea, which is why they’re ideal for reaching more remote destinations. Typically, they have a capacity of between two and 20 people; Hellenic Seaplanes’ models tend to have space for between nine and 19.
Hellenic Seaplanes already operate their licensed aerodromes in Greece, but this is the first move towards international expansion.
In the future, connections could reach as far as the Eastern Mediterranean and even North Africa, but stay tuned for updates as they develop.
