Greece’s Free Ancient Sites For The August Full Moon 2026, Canada Reviews

14 August 20263 Mins Read

If you’re planning a trip to Greece this month, there’s a nationwide event well worth building your itinerary around.

Every year, the country’s Ministry of Culture unlocks more than a hundred archaeological sites, monuments and museums after dark to coincide with the August full moon, letting visitors wander in completely free of charge.

This year? It falls on Friday, August 28, with 126 sites open from around 7.30pm until midnight. Several are promising live concerts, choirs or guided tours thrown in for good measure.

Some of the biggest names in Greek archaeology are taking part. Delphi, the sanctuary where the ancient world once travelled for the Oracle’s word on wars, marriages and everything in between, is open up to the Temple of Apollo terrace.

Ancient Olympia is the birthplace of the Olympic Games and is throwing open the doors of both the site and museum with guided tours led by archaeologists.

In Sparta, the medieval ghost town of Mystras is hosting a musical event, and over in Athens, the Acropolis Museum is staying open from 9am right through to midnight, with free entry to its temporary exhibition on ancient Greek art found in Italy.

The Nekromanteion of Acheron in Epirus, once believed by ancient visitors to be an entrance to the underworld, is ‘built around darkness and ritual,’ says Yahya Dawood, founder of Bnbstay, according to euronews, ‘so visiting it after dark under a full moon isn’t a gimmicky experience, it’s actually one much closer to how it was meant to be experienced than a midday visit ever could be.’

Nearby Dodona, thought to be Greece’s oldest oracle site and built around a sacred oak believed to speak for Zeus, predates even Delphi. It’s also free to visit on the night, from 8pm until midnight.

Over on Crete, the Minoan palace complex at Malia opens with a live performance from Greek singer Manolis Mitsias and a full choir. Gortyna is home to the longest surviving ancient Greek inscription with 600 lines of 5th-century BCE law carved directly into stone, and is also getting its own musical evening.

Dawood also flags Nafpaktos Castle, a Venetian fortress overlooking the Gulf of Corinth, where the moon reflects off the water as well as lighting up the castle. And finally, the Sanctuary of Ammon Zeus in Chalkidiki is hosting a full staged opera performance of Orpheus and Eurydice for the occasion.

The full list of participating sites is available on the Ministry of Culture’s website, and advance booking is required for the Acropolis Museum’s guided tour via its reservation platform.

If you’re planning a wider trip, here’s everything to know about the water shortages currently affecting seven Greek islands.

Or, for more heritage further afield, the 25 new UNESCO World Heritage Sites added across the world in 2026.

Plus: find out the most underrated destinations in Europe for 2026, away from the usual crowds.
