Grupo Mirgor and Meliá Hotels International Partner to Build $50 Million Luxury Hotel in Ushuaia, Argentina

Argentine company Grupo Mirgor and Spain’s Meliá Hotels International have revealed plans to construct a five-star hotel in Ushuaia, Argentina. The luxury hotel will operate under Meliá’s Gran Meliá brand. This venture forms part of Grupo Mirgor’s business diversification strategy and its commitment to boosting the economy of Tierra del Fuego. Concurrently, it aligns with Meliá Hotels International’s goal to encourage qualitative and sustainable tourism in prime destinations.

Meliá Hotels International, deemed the most sustainable hotel company in Europe by Standard & Poor’s Global, will bring its extensive management experience and valuable Gran Meliá brand to the project. Grupo Mirgor will develop the project, which Meliá Hotels will later manage.

The hotel, representing an investment of over $50 million, is set to open in 2028. Upon completion, it will be the southernmost facility the hotel group manages globally.

The hotel will feature 200 rooms, two restaurants, a bar and a lobby bar, and an auditorium with an 800-person capacity. Other amenities include indoor and outdoor pools, a top-tier spa, a fully-equipped gym, a gazebo, and a winter garden.

The initiative aims to bolster local tourism infrastructure and offerings, focusing on corporate and cultural tourism. The hotel is projected to generate around 200 new jobs and stimulate the development of a local supplier network to meet the hotel’s needs for goods and services.

José Luis Alonso, CEO of Grupo Mirgor, underscored the project’s collaborative vision and highlighted Meliá Hotels International’s pivotal role. Meanwhile, Gabriel Escarrer Jaume, Chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International, expressed enthusiasm for the strategic alliance with Grupo Mirgor and the potential of their luxury brands in Argentina.

Gustavo Melella, Governor of the Province of Tierra del Fuego, emphasized the significance of private sector investment in the province and expressed his belief that such a hotel would be a boon for tourism.

Meliá Hotels International operates four hotels in Argentina, with the Gran Melia Iguazú being awarded the best hotel in Argentina by the World Travel Awards for the third successive year.
