GTA 6 Map Officially Triple the Size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s

One of the most important aspects of any Grand Theft Auto game is its setting. Across the series’ fictional locations of San Andreas, Vice City, and Liberty City, players can explore living worlds rich with people, businesses, and landmarks. For Grand Theft Auto 6, Rockstar Games is going bigger than ever before with its largest playable map yet. According to Rockstar, GTA 6‘s Vice City (and regions beyond) will be three times the size of the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2.

That’s according to a new preview of the game in The New York Times, based on interviews with Rockstar Games developers.

How big is Red Dead Redemption 2’s map?

Red Dead Redemption 2‘s map was sizable, though reportedly smaller than Grand Theft Auto 5‘s map. According to one analysis, the full map in Red Dead Redemption 2 measures 43.89 square miles, with a playable area that spans 29 square miles. GTA 5‘s map is believed to be 100 square miles, but that includes a lot of the Pacific Ocean, apparently. Players have walked across Red Dead Redemption 2‘s full map, a feat that takes more than three hours.

Rockstar Games hasn’t officially revealed the full map for GTA 6, but thanks to leaks and fans who have pieced together Leonida’s playable landmass, we have a pretty good idea of what it will look like. It too will include plenty of water, as players will be able to scuba dive, pilot boats and other watercraft, and even swim with dolphins, Rockstar’s extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6 revealed.

All of this will add up to a game that takes roughly 80 hours to beat, by one estimation. According to The New York Times’ preview, Rockstar North studio head Rob Nelson completed an “80-hour play-through of the game in February [that] included the main story and some optional goals with narrative ramifications.” However long it takes, either in hours or miles traveled, it sounds like GTA 6 is going to be big and worth the wait.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on Nov. 19.
