Guns of Escheton is the final game from the artist behind Dishonored and Half-Life 2

1 July 20263 Mins Read

Developer Eschatology Entertainment has announced Guns of Eschaton, a Soulslike FPS that takes place in a supernatural version of the Wild West. The announcement comes alongside a stunning reveal trailer that highlights the game’s gothic cowboy setting. The game’s aesthetic was designed by Viktor Antonov, the art director of Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, who died in 2025.

Guns of Eschaton is described as “the world’s first Soulslike FPS” as well as a supernatural horror Western. In line with Western genre tropes, the game stars a lone gunslinger roaming the land and taking down anyone that stands in his way. This gunslinger, however, has six arms to help in his journey across the apocalyptic wasteland. The official synopsis of the game is as follows:

You are a man who has lost almost everything, trying to return home before the last scraps are taken from him. The road ahead runs across the Old South of America – now transformed into a haunted frontier of ruined settlements, mythic roads, impossible machines, monstrous factions, and historical figures caught between legend and damnation. This is not only the end of America. It is the beginning of something far worse.

In a press release, Eschatology studio head Fuad Kuliev says, “We are incredibly honoured to be revealing Guns of Eschaton, the final project shaped by the extraordinary vision of Viktor Antonov.” Antonov is most famous for serving as the art director on Dishonored and Half-Life 2, but he also worked on titles like Fallout 4, Prey, and DOOM (the influence of which is on full display in the Guns of Eschaton trailer). “From the earliest stages of development,” Kuliev continues, “I had the privilege of shaping this world together with Viktor: where ideas, themes, and concepts evolved through his talent into the world players will see today.”

Gameplay looks like a wild mix between the fast-paced FPS mechanics of DOOM and the tough-as-nails grind of the Dark Souls franchise. Guns of Eschaton‘s Steam page emphasizes how much of a Soulslike the game is, despite the protagonist wielding guns instead of swords. The game will have more than 20 unique weapons that are “built around the feel, limitations, and brutality of 19th-century firearms.” Like other Souls-inspired titles, Guns of Eschaton will encourage players to find unique playstyles through the use of active and passive abilities, custom bullets, armor, consumables, and more.

Bullet variety plays a major role in combat, with enemies having special weaknesses for players to exploit. A particularly interesting enemy design spotted in the trailer is what appears to be an evil train, and as Final Fantasy 6 has established, fighting a train in a video game is always cool. Guns of Eschaton will be playable solo or in co-op.

Guns of Eschaton will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PC. It has no release date at this time.
